It was also because he was a true pillar of the country.
Losing him would be a devastating blow to the nation.
However, if she got injured while trying to pull off the rescue, how would her mother cope? Delilah couldn't handle another heartbreak.
The thought made Lyra hesitate. After turning it over in her head, she realized the only solution was to aggressively hone her driving skills to ensure she wouldn't get hurt. That was why she had randomly signed up for the racing tournament—it gave her the perfect excuse to practice on the road.
A week later, Lyra's imported German sports car was delivered.
Backed by rigorous crash tests and safety data, the reinforced chassis was practically indestructible, giving her an immense sense of security.
The ride height was meticulously tuned, sitting perfectly in the middle. Too low, and a rear-end collision would crumple the frame; too high, and it would easily roll on sharp turns. The balance was flawlessly executed.
Lyra left the house at seven in the morning and arrived at the office by nine.
She spent those two hours entirely on practicing her driving.
As her car cruised over the Everglade Flyover, she paid close attention to her surroundings.
Beneath the overpass sat a sprawling residential area. In her previous life, the accident had occurred right during the morning school rush. When the car lost control, the driver had tried to force it to a halt on the bridge to prevent it from plowing into pedestrians below. That desperate maneuver had sent the vehicle into a fatal barrel roll. Otherwise, the crash wouldn't have been nearly as horrific.
The country wouldn't have lost Secretary Albright and a world-renowned scientist.
That evening, Lyra went out with Caspian.
They caught a movie together. As the credits rolled, she slipped away to the restroom. When she came back out, she spotted Caspian chatting with an elderly couple. Their hair was graying at the temples, and the cuffs of their clothes were worn and frayed.
Lyra froze for a second. By the time she walked over to Caspian, the couple had already walked away.
"Who were they?" she asked.
"Just asking for directions," Caspian replied effortlessly. "Let's go grab a late-night snack."
"I brought you some late-night food."
The two of them headed downstairs. "Were you out with Caspian?" Caleb asked.
"Yeah, Mom wanted me to get out of the house more..." Lyra unwrapped the foil and handed a steaming skewer of BBQ beef to Caleb.
Caleb grinned and took a bite of the meat. Deciding it needed a little something extra, he stood up and grabbed a can of beer from the fridge.
"Caleb..." Lyra started.
"Hmm?"
Lyra had wanted to ask what she would ever do without him. But as the words reached her tongue, she swallowed them down. "Your hair is dripping wet."
Caleb let out a soft chuckle and reached over to ruffle her hair.
