"Let's wait for Leo," Maddie's curiosity had peaked instantly.
She pinned Lyra's arm to the table. "I need to know if his ridiculous theory is actually true!"
Leo was gone for a few minutes before jogging back into the dining room. "Jasmine was blocked outside by his bodyguards. It's so weird... Maybe I really was just overthinking it."
"Oh, so your astigmatism and near-sightedness were miraculously cured, and now you're backing out? I knew you were full of shit!" Maddie smacked his arm. "No wonder Mr. Chavez constantly complains about you. You're grown but can't handle the family business. You have zero focus, turn every actual project into a complete disaster, and have the worst judgment ever. Just looking at you probably gives the old man gray hair!"
Leo just shrugged.
Even if he was wrong, he didn't care.
Lyra thought Maddie was being a little too harsh and quickly tried to smooth things over. "Alright, alright, can we leave now?"
She really couldn't stand being in that room another second.
Otherwise, she'd have to look at Jasmine's face again.
Right on cue, Jasmine walked back into the room.
She looked incredibly pale, returning to her seat without a single word. She sat there in complete isolation, looking entirely out of place amidst the lively chatter of the room.
The other guests exchanged confused glances, utterly bewildered by the scene.
As Rowan's girlfriend, some people immediately swooped in to keep her company, showering her with flattery in a desperate attempt to lighten the mood.
But with the Ford family's recent criminal scandal, the social climbing was noticeably less enthusiastic than it used to be.
Maddie wasn't quite ready to leave yet. She stalled, pulling Lyra out of her chair. "I need to hit the restroom first. Come with me."
Once they were in the bathroom, turning on the faucet, Maddie leaned in. "Jasmine definitely got yelled at, right? What do you think she did?"
Lyra shook her head. She didn't want to speculate.
Instead, she looked at Maddie. "You're a girl. Could you maybe not get into such graphic discussions with Leo? He's a guy, and some things are just..."
Maddie cut her off. "Leo stopped being a guy to me ages ago. He's my gay best friend basically, completely genderless in my book."
