Delilah's bedroom smelled of a faint, soothing lavender that instantly eased the lingering panic in Lyra's chest. Her mother was already in bed. Lyra climbed in quietly, wrapping herself in the plush duvet and curling up into a tight, cozy little ball against her side.
Delilah smiled, affectionately stroking her daughter's hair. "What brings you here? Can't sleep?"
Lyra snuggled closer, breathing in that familiar, comforting scent. "I was just a little spooked today. I wanted to stay with you."
Delilah patted her back soothingly. "It's been years since I've held you like this. I've missed it."
"Me too," Lyra murmured, blinking slowly. Between her restless night and the exhausting day, her eyelids were already growing heavy.
"Sweetheart, what kind of man do you actually like?" Delilah asked softly.
Lyra mumbled sleepily, "Someone who treats me as well as Dad did."
"Do you think Zane Sutton could be that kind of man?" Delilah clearly had a favorable impression of the young man and seemed to approve of him.
Right before she drifted off to sleep, Lyra whispered, "I'll have to keep observing."
In reality, she knew Vivienne Jameson would never allow her stepson to get involved with her.
And right now, Lyra's main philosophy in life was avoiding unnecessary drama at all costs.

When Jonathan Ford returned home, he relayed everything he had heard about the Fairchild family's ordeal, his tone heavy with disbelief. "Word on the street is that Caleb was actually saved by Rowan Jameson."
Jasmine Ford had already seen the news about the Fairchild incident in the papers. She even secretly hoped to use this disaster to crush Fairchild Holdings. But she absolutely refused to believe that Rowan would go out of his way to save Caleb.
