Caspian took a casual drive past the bookstore before finally returning home.
Victoria was violently slapping a stack of credit card bills against the table. "Exactly how are you spending your money? Using credit cards? The collection notices are being mailed directly to the house! Is an allowance of a hundred thousand dollars a month somehow not enough for you?"
"And on top of that, did you get into a fight with your brother? The two of you don't even exchange a single word anymore. Why are the both of you constantly trying to give me a heart attack?"
Charles interrupted his wife's tirade. "Just increase Cas's monthly allowance. You can't raise a child on the same financial standards we used years ago. Rowan was already making his own millions by this age anyway."
Victoria had to admit that Charles's logic made sense, though it still baffled her how Caspian managed to blow through the millions of dollars he received in holiday bonuses every year.
"Fine, you can go. I'll increase your allowance to three hundred thousand dollars a month. Make sure you actually focus on your studies."
Caspian kept his head lowered in complete silence, playing the role of the perfectly obedient son to a tee. Victoria finally dismissed him upstairs.
Grabbing a fresh change of clothes and his backpack, Caspian prepared to head back to campus.
Before he walked out the door, Victoria reminded him, "The Harvest Gala is coming up soon. Make sure you come back from school to keep your grandfather company that evening."
This time, Caspian offered a simple, "Okay."
Seeing how pitifully little her youngest son spoke, Victoria waited until he was gone before turning to Charles. "This kid only ever seems to open up when he's talking to Lyra. Once Rowan is officially married, we might as well just arrange for Cas to marry Lyra."
...
By the second quarter of the year, Jasmine's company had officially logged a catastrophic deficit of hundreds of millions of dollars. The massive capital injection Rowan had previously provided to keep them afloat had been entirely wiped out. The financial chain ruptured violently, sending the entire internal corporate structure into a blind panic.
As the devastating news spread, a vicious argument erupted inside Jasmine's executive office. Shattered porcelain scattered across the floor, and a suffocating cloud of despair blanketed the entire executive floor.
