Chapter 46
Maddie looked up at Lyra. “You know, Lyra, I can’t quite put my finger on it, but you’ve become so much gentler. You’re way more patient than you used to be.”
Maddie was genuinely happy about this shift in her friend.
Lyra just smiled, keeping her thoughts to herself.
Mentally, she was already years older than Maddie now, but that was a secret she had to keep.
“Did your parents fly out to Sydney?”
“Yeah.”
“Why didn’t you go with them?”
“I had things to take care of.”
“Lyra, you’re always so busy these days,” Maddie complained with a pout.
Having eaten a bit too much, she felt the call of nature. “I’m going to run to the restroom. Be right back.”
Stepping out of the restroom a few minutes later, Maddie unexpectedly ran into Lucas Chavez in the hallway of The Sapphire Room.
“What are you doing here?”
Lucas looked just as surprised to see her, his brows instantly knitting together in a harsh scowl. “Who told you about this place?”
Only Rowan, Jasmine, Waylon, and he were supposed to know about this spot. He hadn’t expected to see Maddie of all people. Fortunately, it was just her. As long as he kept her mouth shut…
“Lyra brought me.”
Lucas’s expression shifted. “She’s here too?”
“Why? Is she not allowed?” Maddie frowned, crossing her arms. “Do you own this restaurant or something?”
“I might not own it, but close enough. Rowan bought the place today to give to Jasmine, just because she said the food here was good.”
“Too bad Jasmine has Rowan buying her whole restaurants, while you don’t even have anyone to pick up your check.”
Lyra held back a seething Maddie and met Lucas’s gaze with absolute icy indifference. “You’re trying to imply I came here because I still have feelings for Rowan, right? Let me make this perfectly clear. Aside from a handsome face, the man is entirely morally bankrupt. If I ever fall for him again, I’d be out of my mind.”
“Perfect.” Lucas clapped his hands in mock applause. “I hope you keep your word.”
With that, Lucas finally stepped out of the doorway.
Lyra grabbed Maddie’s arm and walked out, vowing never to return to The Sapphire Room again.
To their surprise, Rowan was standing right in the middle of the hallway. He looked as though he had just ended a call, his phone casually grasped in his hand. He radiated a dangerous, elegant authority, and there was no telling if he had overheard their exchange.
His gaze briefly swept over Lyra before he dismissed her entirely, turning on his heel to enter his private room.
Whether he heard her or not, Lyra no longer cared.
She pulled Maddie along, leaving the restaurant behind without a second glance.
