Chapter 49
Panic rippled through the office all day. Lyra retreated to her office, opened her laptop, and methodically combed through her emails.
When the workday finally ended, Lyra turned to Caleb. “Caleb, I want to go pick them up at the airport.”
Caleb offered a bitter smile. “Do you want to get slapped in public? Because causing a scene at the airport is a surefire way to make the evening news.”
As one of Seaborne City’s prominent families, the Chairman of Fairchild Holdings was a staple at economic forums, and Caleb himself was a frequent face in the media.
“Would Dad really do that?” Lyra grabbed his hand, a sudden wave of apprehension washing over her.
Arthur had never laid a finger on her.
It wasn’t physical pain she feared; it was the thought of severely disappointing her father.
“Hard to say.” Caleb figured their father would spare his sister but absolutely take a swing at him.
“Let’s just head home.”
Caleb snagged his trench coat from the armrest of the sofa. Just then, his phone rang. It was the housekeeper, Martha, frantically explaining that a massive mob of relatives, along with distant acquaintances they didn’t even recognize, had completely overrun their house…
Caleb ended the call with a heavy sigh and tossed his coat back onto the sofa. “We’ll head back later.”
Lyra and Caleb ordered takeout to the office, deliberately stalling until eight o’clock before finally making their way home.
By their calculations, their father’s flight would be landing very soon.
When the siblings pulled into the Fairchild estate, they could barely find a spot to park. The entire driveway and the street outside were packed bumper-to-bumper with strange cars.
Caleb rubbed his temples, resigning himself to the impending headache. “Why don’t you wait in the car?”
“No way,” Lyra refused flatly, gripping Caleb’s hand tightly.
The estate manager had already left for the airport to pick up their parents.
The living room was swarming with people, with Martha nervously pouring water for the uninvited guests. The moment Caleb and Lyra stepped through the front door, the mob demanding justice surged forward, surrounding them in an angry uproar.
“Lyra Fairchild, how could such a kind man like your father raise such a vicious daughter!”
“You ruthless corporate sharks!”
“Fairchild Holdings gets big and suddenly you forget the people who helped you build it! Have you no conscience?”
Fiona Sterling’s seventy-year-old mother shoved her way to the front and grabbed Lyra’s arm.
“We showed you respect, and you fire my daughter? Rehire her this instant!”
As she moved toward the staircase, a man blocked her path.
It was a distant relative from Delilah’s side of the family. “This is all your doing, isn’t it, Lyra? Going to run and hide after creating this massive disaster?”
“If you have a problem with my sister’s decisions, you can take it up with me.” Caleb swatted the man’s arm away and turned a stern gaze on Lyra. “Go out to the balcony and see if Dad’s car is here yet.”
“She’s not going anywhere! My mom said this is all your fault! Everything went to hell the second you stepped into that office.” The girl screaming was Fiona’s daughter, Seraphina Sterling. Though she was only in college, she was already a relatively famous online streamer. In Lyra’s past life, when the Fairchilds were ruined, Seraphina had capitalized on the scandal, racking up millions of views and massive profits by spreading vicious rumors about Fairchild Holdings.
Right now, Seraphina was shoving her phone camera straight into Lyra’s face, broadcasting live. “Look at this, guys! This is how the wealthy heiress of the Fairchild family treats the company’s most loyal veterans! She hasn’t even been at the company for a week and she’s already doing mass
layoffs! Not only is she firing employees who bled for the company, but she’s maliciously framing them. My mom worked at Fairchild Holdings for fifteen years. Fifteen years! And she was just kicked to the curb. How can someone be so evil…”
Seraphina had a solid following, and the moment she went live, thousands of viewers flooded her stream.
Seeing the blinding camera light, Lyra instinctively raised a hand to shield her face.
Sensing her target’s hesitation, Seraphina grew even bolder, shoving the lens closer. “Guys, when Fairchild Holdings was founded, they promised it was a family! And now look at them, firing everyone one by one!”
“Fifteen years! My mom gave her youth to that place. She helped build that company from the ground up, helped it go public, made millions of dollars for the Fairchilds, and they just terminate her without a word…”
Lyra remembered the bitter truth from her past life. When the Fairchild family collapsed, Fiona and her family had already fled the country, living a life of luxury abroad on the millions they had embezzled. And Seraphina had stayed behind just long enough to ruthlessly kick Fairchild Holdings while it was down…
