"Can we chat now?" Zane asked.
Lyra didn't really want to, but she nodded anyway.
The three of them found a table by the window. Sensing they needed a moment, Lena looked at Zane. "What would you like to drink? I'll go order."
Lyra was just about to politely offer to give him one of the coffees she was already holding, but Zane spoke first. "A matcha latte."
Lyra curled her fingers inward and didn't make a move.
Lena offered a sweet smile. "Coming right up."
Zane smiled back at her.
A faint thread of bitterness twisted in Lyra's chest, but it didn't last long. She took a quiet breath, slowly smoothing out the lingering ache until she felt nothing but acceptance.
Once Lena stepped away, Zane chose his words carefully. "About our past promises..."
"It's okay," Lyra interrupted gently.
She looked toward the counter where Lena stood. With her hair pulled back into a sleek ponytail, she looked vibrant and full of life. Lyra remembered hearing that Lena had only graduated a year ago—she was in the prime of her life.
"I can tell you really care about her, don't you?"
Zane nodded, his voice softening. "At first, I just thought she was sweet. But as we spent more time together, we just clicked. She has such a pure, kind heart. She even rescues animals. I'll introduce you two properly in a minute..."
"There's no need," Lyra said, offering a faint smile. "Things are fine just the way they are."
"As long as you're happy, my guilt won't be as heavy."
Lyra's main concern was whether Rowan was making things difficult for him. "Has your cousin been treating you well?"
"Yeah," Zane replied. "He's been sending people to help me out. He said..."
Rowan had actually said that anything Caleb could do, he could do better. But since Caleb was Lyra's brother, Zane felt it was inappropriate to repeat the exact words.
He quickly changed the subject. "I have a half-sister, Maisie. She can be a bit willful, but Lena tried reaching out to her, and surprisingly, Maisie didn't push her away. It feels like everything is finally heading in a good direction."
Zane smiled.
He was a man who had endured loneliness for years. Cold isolation had been his normal state for so long that the moment someone offered him a flicker of warmth, he couldn't help but fall for them.
Well, Lyra thought, that just meant she hadn't done enough for him when she had the chance.
