Lyra ground her teeth, a wave of suffocating anger washing over her.
She remembered her past life perfectly. Rowan had destroyed Fairchild Holdings overnight, entirely ruining her family, simply because he mistakenly believed she had ordered someone to hit Jasmine with a car.
But in this life? Jasmine had repeatedly tried to kill her—hiding a bomb in a gift box, ruthlessly pushing her toward a massive truck. Every single incident was lethal. Yet, in the end, the Ford family's business merely collapsed, and they were forced to leave Seaborne City. Jasmine herself hadn't suffered any actual punishment; she was completely unscathed.
"What, looking at me like you want to eat me alive?"
Rowan leaned in close, his thumb and forefinger gripping her chin with a firm, dominant hold. An indescribable emotion swirled in his dark eyes as he teased in a husky whisper, "I'll let you eat me, how about that?"
Just then, the phone in Lyra's pocket vibrated.
She pulled out of his grasp and hurried into the restroom.
It was an unfamiliar number.
When she answered, Frederick Parker's calm, steady voice came through the line. "It's Frederick. I got your number from Caleb. Lyra, how are you really feeling? Why did you hide the truth from your brother about what happened yesterday? Why lie?"
"I just didn't want him to worry, so I kept it to myself," Lyra replied, looking at her reflection in the mirror and forcing a lighthearted tone. "It was the Ford family who kidnapped me. My bodyguard got there in time to protect me. I wasn't hurt, just unconscious for a few hours. I'm sorry I didn't contact you sooner."
"I'm perfectly fine on my end," Frederick said gently, "but you can't carry everything on your own. The butterfly effect is real. Covering things up now might seem easy, but it plants seeds for future trouble. Don't always try to shoulder the burden by yourself."
Lyra lowered her gaze, listening to his advice, and murmured a soft agreement.
"By the way, I looked into it," he added. "Mrs. Sawyer takes such good care of the Ford family because her granddaughter used to have feelings for Jasmine's brother. It's a bit of misplaced affection on Mrs. Sawyer's part..."
Lyra hung up shortly after.
When she walked out, Rowan had just placed a slice of bacon on her plate. "Even taking calls in the restroom now. You're quite the busy woman."
Lyra sat down and took a few bites, her face blank. The food tasted like ash.
