When they reached the ground floor, Maddie and Lyra were still talking. The elevator doors slid open, and Rowan and Wesley Wade were standing right there, waiting to step in.
Maddie's cursing abruptly died on her lips.
Startled, Lyra took a step back, her spine pressing against the elevator wall.
It felt like seeing a ghost. If Rowan was standing right here, then who the hell had been passionately kissing Sylvia upstairs?
The two men stepped inside. Only Wesley offered them a polite smile.
Rowan had one hand tucked casually into his pocket while the other scrolled through his phone. He didn't spare Lyra a single glance.
Just as the doors began to slide shut, Maddie snapped out of her daze and blurted, "Wait!"
Wesley hit the open button. Maddie forced an awkward smile, grabbed Lyra's arm, and dragged her out of the elevator.
Once they were a safe distance away, Maddie glanced back. Just before the doors completely sealed, Rowan had lowered his phone, his icy gaze fixed directly on them. It lasted only a second before the doors clicked shut.
Maddie patted her chest. "That scared the life out of me! That guy upstairs had the exact same build as Rowan. Should we tell him?"
"No," Lyra shook her head quickly. "Rowan isn't exactly an angel either. It's perfectly fair."
Maddie nodded. "You're right. A guy like Rowan isn't worth our energy. If he's getting played, it's none of our business."
"But with their backs looking so identical, who's the real stand-in here?" Maddie muttered under her breath. "She's known Rowan since middle school. Maybe that stranger upstairs is the actual replacement!"
