The truth was, while he was on the phone dealing with the crowd on the yacht, he had taken a picture of the necklace and sent it to Jasmine Ford...
"I saw it," Lyra Fairchild said, wiping a nervous sheen of sweat from her forehead.
Maddie said, "Leo Chavez mentioned they're gathering at the usual spot tonight. He also said Rowan Jameson is bringing Jasmine. Are you coming?"
Lyra initially wanted to refuse, but then she remembered that Caleb had also been there on this exact day in her previous life, and he had gotten into a massive fight with Rowan.
The Fairchild family's tragedy had likely begun that very night.
"I'll be there," Lyra said quickly.
"Alright, you don't have to yell," Maddie muttered on the other end, pulling the phone away from her ear.
Lyra hung up and hurried downstairs. She needed to go to the office right away to find Caleb. She had to stop him from clashing with Rowan tonight.
Upon arriving at Fairchild Holdings, she marched straight into Caleb's office.
To prevent Caleb from doing anything reckless, Lyra stated her position clearly. "Caleb, I don't have feelings for Rowan anymore."
Caleb hadn't expected his sister to barge in, acting a little frantic. He frowned. "Are you just saying that because you heard he likes Jasmine? Don't listen to what those people say."
"No, it's not about Jasmine. I've just realized that Rowan isn't my type."
Caleb looked surprised. "Are you serious?" He knew exactly how much Lyra used to adore Rowan. Whenever Rowan was around, she never had eyes for anyone else.
"Absolutely serious."
"Got it," Caleb said. He had always hated watching Lyra chase after a guy who barely gave her the time of day. Now with Jasmine in the picture... he figured his sister had finally reached her breaking point and given up.
Whatever. Rowan wasn't the only decent man in Seaborne City.
"Don't worry, I'll find you a better guy."
Lyra tilted her head and smiled. "Thanks, Caleb."
Seeing that her mood wasn't entirely ruined, Caleb felt a wave of relief. As the CEO of Fairchild Holdings, he had a scheduled visit to an affiliated factory to inspect some goods.
"I'm heading to the factory. I can drop you off at home on the way."
"Actually, just drop me off at the bookstore. I need to pick up a few things."
Lyra was about to graduate from college. Her thesis was already finalized and approved, and she didn't need to worry about job offers. In her past life, she had nothing to do at this point, simply waiting around to become Rowan's bride. Aside from endless shopping sprees, she hadn't cultivated any real interests.
But now, she had Caleb drop her off at a nearby bookstore, where she selected a few industry-related books and settled down to read.
...
That evening, at one of Seaborne City's most exclusive high-end clubs.
When Lyra entered the private room, several of Rowan's childhood friends, including Lucas Chavez and Waylon Grayson, were already there. With plus-ones included, there were about a dozen people. Caleb was also present, his expression grim, suggesting that the previous conversation hadn't been pleasant.
Lyra furrowed her brows.
Maddie spotted her immediately and waved enthusiastically. "Lyra, over here."
Lyra took the empty seat to Maddie's right. Not long after, she heard Lucas's girlfriend exclaim from the other side of the room, "The Ford family? Which Fords?"
"No way... How did those two end up together?"
Lyra lifted her gaze toward the whispering group.
They shot sympathetic looks at Lyra before quickly schooling their expressions into secretive smirks.
Someone suddenly blurted out, "Isn't Lyra going to cry her eyes out?"
Everyone in this room was about to choose sides.
But unfortunately for her, no one here had the guts to cross Rowan.
Even Lucas, the heir to the Chavez Group, was essentially just one of Rowan's lackeys.
Unfazed by her icy stare, Lucas offered a mocking smirk. "Drink up. That way you can at least pretend you're winning against Jasmine."
Caleb walked over, and Lucas finally reined in his attitude at the sight of the older man.
Caleb took the seat on Lyra's other side.
Maddie, who had already greeted him earlier, acknowledged him again. "Caleb."
Caleb nodded in response. Just as he settled in, the door to the private room swung open.
The air in the room instantly grew thick with tension.
Rowan walked in, Jasmine by his side.
"Well, well, look what gorgeous couple just arrived," Lucas crowed.
Following his loud greeting, the crowd in the room immediately swarmed around the newcomers, showering them with compliments.
Only Lyra's section of the couch remained completely still. Neither Caleb nor Maddie moved an inch.
Maddie watched Rowan lead Jasmine in by the hand, carefully studying her best friend's reaction.
Given Lyra's usual fiery temper, Maddie fully expected her to jump up and tear the two-faced woman to shreds.
To her shock, Lyra didn't even flinch.
