“Okay, soooo… the fabrics are Italian silk and French lace for the premium line, sixty-inch width for gowns, twenty-four for the accessories. We’re going with champagne gold because it flatters every skin tone.” I point to the projector, snapping my fingers at Calvin to move it.”
Calvin clicks through the slides fast. He worked with me all night on this project….literally, we were up until 3am going over numbers. He’s our lead strategist now, hired by Alexa when we started blowing up. In one day, we got major invites to work with other brands. Luxury houses that wouldn’t have returned our emails last year are now asking for meetings.
We’re particularly focused on Dec Claire right now cause I’m the face behind it, and new CFO.
Which means I also own greater shares of our company than I used to. Like, actual voting power. Like, when I say something happens, it happens. It’s wild to think about me sitting in board meetings.
“Where are we gonna get the budget to maximize so much?” Brooke asks, tapping her pen on her notebook. “I mean, of course, your recent… situation… has given us an edge in the industry, but this is a massive material order. We’re talking hundreds of thousands just for the initial run.”
“I think it’s gonna work.” Alex closes her notes.
“How?” Brooke raises an eyebrow.
“Because everyone wants to wear something from De Claire.” Alex leans forward. “So if we made a clothing line…say, three premium, mid-range, and an affordable capsule collection. Everyone from New York, Park Avenue wives to downtown influencers will want a piece of it. We raise our budget through pre-orders and exclusivity contracts. Easy.”
“That’s smart.” Max nods slowly.
“But it has to be something that only relates to Jennifer.” Flora chimes in. “Otherwise why the hell would they buy it? If it has nothing to do with her, it’s just clothes.”
Brooke sits back with a roll of her eyes but she doesn’t disagree.
“Exactly.” Calvin snaps his fingers. “As your lead strategist, I agree with Flora. The brand is Jennifer. The face is Jennifer. The story is Jennifer.”
I trust Calvin with these things. He’s worked for pretty popular brands that have whole floors in luxury malls. We were only able to hire him because he needed a fresh breeze, something different that he hasn’t been seen before. So here we go.
Flora blinks and blushes when she speaks. Calvin’s been making her and the other receptionists really blushy lately. He’s handsome. Wavy hair, the kind of face that used to be my type when I was in high school.
“Tell us more.”
“Okay… so. Imagine this. You in an outfit, we call the paparazzi, but we make it look organic. Maybe you’re grocery shopping. Maybe you’re walking into a coffee shop. We add some chic effect to it, you clutching an Hermès piece at your side. Then we spread propaganda. Get the news channels to talk about how crazy the texture looks, how the fabric moves, how you glow in it.”
“Guess what it does?” He pauses for effect.
“What!” Flora squeals and we all look at her. She covers her mouth, face red.
“It makes everyone want the dress.” Calvin finishes. “They try to and out who made it. They search for it. They obsess over it. And then, we open our portals, allow them to pre-order. Limited stock. First come, first serve. By the time the pre-orders close, we’ve already funded the entire production run.”

“Whoa.” I start clapping and Max joins in with a “hoho!” that echoes off the glass walls.
“JENNIFER!”

Tinka pushes open the glass door of our group meeting area so hard it swings all the way to the wall. I remove the plushie from my lap and sit up.
“What are you doing here-”
“Get up. We’re going to the Prescott mansion.”
“Tinka, I’m…” I wave my hand around the room. “We’re having a meeting!”
“Yeah but there’s something far more important.”
“I think we’re done with the meeting.” Calvin says, looking at the team. “Everyone agrees, right?”
Everyone nods.
I scoff and get on my feet to meet Tinka at the door.
“It better be good. I’m trying to be a good CFO here.” I walk quickly to my office, pushing the door open for her. The moment I shut it, her phone is in my face.
I blink. It’s a live video on Instagram. Some girl I don’t even recognize. I blink again, trying to process what I’m seeing.
“Jen, read the fucking comments!”
“Alright…Alright…”
“OMG Nisha your room is so pretty!”
“The aesthetic! Where is this?”
“Is this the Prescott mansion?!”
“Wait Nisha lives here?!”
“This

“New money who??”
Nisha’s room? That’s not Nisha’s
That’s MY room.
I look closer at the video. The cream and gold furniture. The windows overlooking the gardens. The bathroom door in the background…I used that bathroom this morning and left my hairbrush on that vanity.
And now, there are people I do not know in it!
“That’s “I grab the phone from Tinka’s hands.
“Exactly. If we move fast we can still get them. I left work for this and you’re already closed so let’s move! Nisha really took people to your own house and made it seem like it’s hers and the fucking comments are glazing her like she’s the queen of England. Where are your keys!?”
“Table.” I say, but I’m not really looking at her. I’m watching the video again, watching them touch the things that feel too fancy to even breathe on because this whole life feels like a dream that doesn’t belong to me, like it could be snatched away at any moment.

I’m still looking at her phone, not really paying attention to where I’m going, when I bump into Tinka’s back. She’s stopped in the hallway and I lift my head to see what the problem is.
“Ahh… ah…” she stammers, and then I see it’s Calvin.
“Who’s the beefcake.” Tinka whispers.
“You have a boyfriend.” I grab her hand and yank her forward. “See you on Monday!”
We burst out of the building and Tinka throws herself into the driver’s seat. I barely get the passenger door closed before she’s peeling out of the parking lot. The driver Rosie assigned me. Marcus is already in his car behind us, probably confused why I’m being kidnapped by my best friend.
Tinka drives like she’s in a Fast and Furious movie until she skids into the Prescott estate driveway.
I barely have my seatbelt off before she’s out of the car.
