“Hi, Nisha.” I give her a little wave, watching her face go through about five different emotions in three seconds.
“Did we interrupt your live video?” Tinka holds up her phone whose screen is still glowing with the Instagram stream. Nisha blinks like she’s about to spontaneously combust right there on the marble floor.
“Um…” Her mouth opens and closes. No sound comes out.
“You’re Jennifer, right? The new Mrs. Prescott?” The taller girl with big eyes asks.
“Yes-”
“Why were you in Jennifer’s room?” Tinka folds her arms across her chest, not even letting me speak to Nisha’s friends. She’s got that look that says she’s about to go full attack mode.
“Jennifer’s room?” The blonde one scrunches her nose. “No, that was Nisha’s room. She said it was her suite. She said the whole wing was hers now.”
Nisha’s face is burning really red and it’s not a blush. Blotchy red patches crawling up her neck like a rash. Her hands are shaking with eyes are darting between me, Tinka, the door, the stairs, anywhere that isn’t here.
“Um, it’s already getting late. You guys should leave?”
Tinka giggles in a scary way. She’s been waiting for this moment since the first time Nisha looked at her wrongs so I’m gonna let her handle this. I’m not taking this moment away from my best friend.
That’s when I see Harvey walking toward us from the other end of the hallway.
I stare at him, surprised. A smile breaks across my face before I can stop it. I didn’t know he’d be home this early. Between the company and the casino, I thought he’d be back when the morning was dark.
But then I notice the smoke curling from his nostrils as he comes forward, cigarette pinched between his fingers like an afterthought. He should look terrifying like this but his hair isn’t scattered over his face today. It’s pulled back in a neat bun. He actually took my advice for the office meetings. Good. Now the shareholders may not sweat in their pants.
But one thing’s for sure…he’s about to clear this hallway faster than a fire alarm. Any moment now, those girls are going to take one look at his face and scatter like birds.
“Hi, Harvey.” Tinka chirps.
The
group
of girls all turn at once.
One by one, I watch them freeze. Then gasp.
But instead of being scared, their cheeks go pink which means they are blushing…blushing at my HUSBAND. I should step forward and wrap my arm around his waist and make it very clear who he goes home to at night.
These girls-
“What are you doin
at this side of the house?” Harvey’s voice is flat at Nisha who looks like a bug.
Her friends look at her and I see Tinka go over to stand beside Harvey like she’s his backup for this conversation.

“She was busy in Jennifer’s room having a party.” Tinka says it so sweetly.
“No no no!” Nisha squeals, tripping over someone’s handbag. “I mean… I was just… kidding with the girls! I didn’t say it was my room! I didn’t say it was my room! I really didn’t!”
“And is that true?” Tinka turns to Nisha’s friends.
“She said it was her room. That’s why we went in there in the first place.”
“I swear!” The blonde whips toward me. “I would never have gone in there if I thought it wasn’t her bedroom.”
“Me too. I really thought it was Nisha’s.” Another girl chimes in. “Um, please forgive me. I mean forgive us.”
They’re tripping over their apologies now, all of them, like they think I’m about to have them escorted out by security. I almost feel bad for them.
Harvey looks at me like I’m supposed to decide how this ends.
“Can you guys excuse us, ladies?” He finally says, his voice never rising above that low, measured tone. “Um… Rosie, please help them out.”
Rosie guides the girls toward the front entrance. They glance back at Nisha as they go, glaring. Nisha tries to follow them, but her feet stay glued to the floor.
Harvey and I haven’t talked about whether she’s even allowed to stay here. She’s practically a stranger. The only reason we let her is because Francis…before the heart attack made it clear he wanted Baxter and Nisha to stay together. We don’t know if it was punishment or if he really wants them married.
“I’m…” Nisha turns to me like she’s just realized I’m the sensible one now that the real danger is here. The one she’d rather grovel to now that Harvey is standing there with smoke still curling from his nostrils.
“I’m sorry, Jennifer. I swear that was stupid. Going into your room and touching your stuff, I should not have done that. I… I will never ever do it again.”
Rosie arrives back while Nisha is explaining away.
“Ma’am, you were not supposed to be here!”
“I… I know. I swear, I know.”
“Wow, Nisha. I could have sworn you had bigger confidence when you walked into De Claire with… what’s that rat’s name? Oh, Jenna.”
And just like that, I remember Jenna which leads me back to the Don and how we got attacked.
“Please take care of this.” I tell Rosie. “Tinka, I’ll be back.”

I
grab Harvey’s hand and pull him toward the first door I see….a small sitting room off the main hallway. I push him inside and use my hands and my butt to shove the door closed behind us. He twists the cigarette out against the table edge.
“Sorry about that.”
“Oh please. It’s

She’s

“How was work?” We say it at
same time.
Harvey’s mouth curves into that charming smile he saves just for me. “You go first.”

*Let me see, our new hire is remarkable. He took my idea and made it even better. The team is actually accepting the changes for once.”
“Hmm.” Harvey’s eyebrow lifts, just slightly. “He?”
I ignore the emphasis. “Yeah. What about you? How was your day?”
“I have consented the family to see dad. Just Baxter, Emily, and Winny. That’s it.”
I step closer to him, watching the way the light from the window cuts across his face. He smiles when he sees me coming, and I have to laugh even though I’m trying to be serious. I want ask about Jenna. About her father. About whether the Don’s whole crew is still gunning for us. From what I know, they shouldn’t be able to get anywhere near the Prescott estate… the security here is insane.
I can’t say the next thing because Harvey kisses me, and I forget my own name.
His lips are warm and patient like he’s got all the time in the world.
When he pulls back, my eyes are still closed.
“I know what you wanna ask.” His voice is low,
“Tell me then.”
“I’m trying to keep you from all of this.”
“Too bad.” I poke him in his chest. “You married me. You were making calls while we were sleeping. I heard your voice.”
Harvey’s smile spreads slow. “Wow. And I really thought I knocked you out.”
“You did.” I blush but push it away.
“Now, Harvey, don’t even think about a wedding if this matter isn’t sorted yet. What if they barged in? What if they attacked like those movies in Italy? Like those Don movies?” I’m dramatic on purpose, waving my hands and making it bigger than it
“I’m having someone dig dirt on the Don.” Harvey’s voice goes serious. “To use to negotiate my way. There’s a friend in Italy, and he’s getting very close to something big. Something so big I won’t even have to pay for the damages I caused. But because I’m sweet as sugar, I will anyway.”
“What kind of dirt?”
“The kind my wife shouldn’t be hearing about. It’s underworld matter.”
“Harvey.”
