I had a few drinks after that first shot Jenna gave me. Okay, fine, I had like… eight. I’m a bit tipsy. Or maybe drunk. Wait, why is Harvey still pulling me? Where is he taking me so angrily-

“Harvey, you’re hurting me!” I yank my hand out of his and rub my wrist where he was squeezing.

“Why are you drunk?” He looks at me all serious, like he’s my overprotective big brother or something.

I roll my eyes.

“I’m… not drunk. Just tipsy.”

I roll my eyes. “I’m not drunk. Just… tipsy.”

“If I wasn’t there right now-” he starts yelling like anger is sitting right under his skin, then cuts himself off, shaking his head like saying anything else would be pointless.

“Did you bring me here to kiss me, boss?” I laugh and stumble into him, because the ground feels softer than it should. He catches me instantly.

“Jen-”

“Just say it.” I grin up at him, too aware of how close his kissable mouth is.

“I’m taking you home.”

“I’m here to work.” I say quickly but then I remember I already handled my part of styling Nisha.

“Oh, so for the rest of the week, I’m supposed to be taking care of you.” I poke his chest, bite my lip without meaning to and drag my finger down just because I can.

“Let’s go.”

“But they’re gonna party all night.” I tell him, feeling his hand tighten on my waist as he starts steering me toward the exit.

“Jen!” I hear someone call my name. It sounds like Baxter, but Harvey drags me through the door before I can look back.

We stumble into the parking lot. The wind is crazy tonight, whipping my hair everywhere. Harvey is definitely taking me to the driveway, I can tell. But all of a sudden, the moment we hit the open parking lot, I’m not drunk enough to miss the incoming shadows.

Guys or is it…gangsters. A bunch of them. They start forming a circle around us, just appearing out of nowhere.

The alcohol in my system evaporates. My head clears in a cold, sharp snap as Harvey’s hand tightens on my

waist too.

“Ha… Harv?” My voice comes out thin.

“Shit.” he mutters, like he already knew this was coming.

I shrink closer to him when I really see them.

One guy has a knife.

Another one has a bat like he’s been waiting all night to swing it.

One has metals wrapped around his knuckles and more of them with butcher-looking blades. Or….machetes. Harvey shoves me behind like that’s where I belong. And suddenly, everything that was spinning in my head goes crystal clear!

“Jennifer!” Baxter yells, running out from the club to find us. He skids to a stop. “What the hell—”

“Whoa, it’s the two Prescott heirs. This must be the Baxter one, isn’t it?” one of the guys in a black shirt says. He’s covered in tattoos…half his face is inked and a thick Italian accent slurs his English. I just hold onto Harvey’s hoodie tighter.

“What do you want? A fight? Let’s get it over with!” Harvey’s voice is different. Low, cold, lethal. For the first time, I’m seeing why he has all those tattoos.

“You messed around with the Don’s-”

“If you wanna fight, let’s fight!” Harvey cuts him off. The way he is so confident. You wouldn’t even know there are knives pointing at us.

“Heard you can throw hands but I don’t think you got enough for all of us.” the leader spits on the ground. “If we knew you were in Italy here earlier, we’d have boxed you in and turned you to paste. And every time we catch your face after this, we’ll do it again. And again. ‘Til you crawl back where you came from. That’s the price for disrespecting a Don.”

Harvey steps away from me. What happens next is a blur. I don’t even see him move until I hear a fists crack into flesh. Bones thud. Someone goes down before they can even lift their arm.

Harvey’s fist flies out and back in a motion so fast it’s just a shadow.

Someone charges with a knife. Harvey moves like his body has no bones. He twists the guy’s arm in a horrible, backwards jerk, yanks him up, and slams him down onto the concrete.

He’s fighting like someone just released from a cage. Crack. Crack. Sharp, sick sounds and groans fill the air, but none of them are coming from Harvey. He’s fast. Too fast for my eyes to follow. He’s not just fighting; he’s breaking them. Delivering injuries.

He moves like an enforcer. A machine. He punches like he doesn’t know how to stop. And now I understand… the tattoos make sense. His hands must be made of stone. How does he know when someone’s about to swing? Is this the danger Baxter and everyone whispers about? Is this the version of him they’re all scared of?

Because I swear, I saw him smile as he threw a punch.
