“He made me marry Nisha, and-”
“No.” I cut him off. “Your old man found out you were marrying Nisha so that when he retires, he’d see you as fit to give his will to. It was in front of his guests. The reporters were there. You know Dad hates scandals. He literally took me to apologize to the bastard who came at us the other time in Italy.”
“Do you know who did it? I’ve thought about it all day, Harvey. You knew about the contract-”
“Bullshit.” I come closer. “I’m gonna stop you right there, you fucking idiot. I was not the only one who knew about it. And even if I was, why would I stop you from getting married to Nish?”
“Because you didn’t want Dad to see me as responsible—”
“Oh, is that it? And when are you going to tell me the truth about how you sent someone…a guy named Jeremy into my casino to steal a suitcase from a client who happens to be one of Dad’s biggest shareholders?”
Baxter swallows, hard. The color drains from his face. Got him.
“Assuming you had come to me face-to-face and let me know it was you behind it, I would have let the suitcase matter go. But stupidly!” I raise my voice, stepping into his space. He still doesn’t get why I’m so furious.
“Stupidly, I chased the idiot, and the men I sent to find him did far worse than I asked. And it’s gonna cost me Jennifer!”
“How is Jennifer—”
“Because the guy you hired is her brother,” I say, and Baxter’s eyes widen in genuine shock.
“He said his father’s convenience store got burnt.”
“Exactly. And then you weren’t paying him, so he sold the stolen goods to someone else to cover the loss for his father…who had a heart attack after his store was burnt to a crisp.”
“And how do you know this? How…how do you just know all this
“Because it’s Reign, the fool you invited to the wedding that orchestrated this. Well, to get to me.” I shake my head at the twisted mess. Reign did it as revenge because he saw I was involved, and in his sick mind, Jennifer was part of the equation
too.
“Wait. Wait. Wait. This makes no freaking sense. Why would Reign-why would he, Harvey? I don’t understand!”
“Let me spell it out!” I snap. “Reign hates me and wants revenge He wants to destroy anything that makes me happy. That’s Jennifer. He recognized her because he already knew her brothe…which is Jeremy, the man you hired. He bought the stolen goods to use as leverage, to twist the knife.”
I turn my back and run a hand through my hair.
“So you’re gonna let him play this? He did this because of you? that what you’re telling me? That this is your fault-
“No, it’s your bloody fault if you forgot to read between the line I whirl back around. “Am I the one who got into a shady contract? No. Am I the one who didn’t pay the guy who did a job for me? No. Am I the one who invited Reign to the wedding? No. Do you see how stupid you’ve been, Baxter?”
As soon as I’m done talking, he sinks onto the couch.
your luggage home. I’m sure Winnie won’t let you sleep on the streets.”
“It’s embarrassing”
“I’m sure it is. You can add another layer to that embarrassment by telling everyone what really happened that rainy night,

too. A bet is a bet, you know.”
Baxter shakes his head and glares at me. “I’m literally already crushed! How much more can I sink!?”
“I don’t mind.” I say, my face is utterly blank
“You won’t even know I’m here.”
“Except I will. Jennifer will be visiting whenever she likes.”
Baxter scoffs, but then his expression shifts. “Wait, does Jennifer know?”
“No.” I growl. “And you better keep that mouth shut.”

My phone buzzes with a text. It’s from Jennifer. Before I even open it, I look at Baxter and his stupid luggage. Blocked cards, no money..I can smell the desperation on him. He came here because, at the end of the day, he’d rather fall back on the one person who isn’t impressed by him. He could’ve gone to his jock friends, but it’d be humiliating if they knew the rich kid they mooched off had been cut off by Daddy.
I’ll pay for you to stay in a motel or something—”
“A motel!” he scoffs. “You realize the paparazzi know I’m newlywed and they’re looking for scoops right now? You’re trying
to feed me to the lions—”
