Jennifer Marie.
I shut the car door and see Harvey waiting at the entrance of his house, giving me a wave. I am actually supposed to see him at his club later. Max is having his birthday, and since the design team gets to pay for the celebration spot, he chose the King’s Casino. So we’re all going there tonight.
At least something good came out of Italy. With all the drama that went wrong, at least our team wasn’t part of it. Just seeing Harvey makes me feel instantly better, even though the image of my dad in that hospital bed kept me up all night.
As soon as I’m a few steps away, I open my arms to hug him. When I land against his chest, I let out a breath I didn’t know I was holding and close my eyes, just letting everything melt away for a second. And Harvey… he hugs so well. I can’t believe he’s a good hugger when he looks like the complete opposite.
“Talk to me.” he says softly while his hand cradles the back of my head.
I open my eyes, ready to spill everything, and to my greatest surprise, I find myself staring straight at Baxter over Harvey’s shoulder.
I stop hugging Harvey and my face is probably a picture of shock. Harvey turns, as if he’d momentarily forgotten his brother was there. I remember what happened the last time Baxter was here…him having sex with Nisha on the pool table, getting punched… yeah, not a pretty memory.
“You’re back?” I ask as Baxter crosses his arms, looking defensive.
“He has been disowned.” Harvey states, matter-of-fact.
“I have not been disowned.” Baxter rolls his eyes.
But the way he stuffs his hands in his pockets and looks utterly pulverized… I think he has. “Is that why you’re here?” I ask. Cause if he’s disowned it makes sense. Baxter spent his whole time in Italy spraying money everywhere. It makes sense that getting cut off would send him searching for a place to crash.
But at Harveys!?
I ask the question, and Harvey looks like he’s just waiting to answer it for him. He pushes a hand through his hair and the tattooed skull on his neck peeks out. His gaze flicks between me and Baxter before he delivers it. “He’s broke. Daddy blocked all his cards.”
“Oh,” I say, watching Baxter just shrug with another eye roll, the picture of defeated arrogance. “And you wanna live here? No offense, but the last time you were here, you guys fought. Are you sure you’re not gonna fight again?”
“Jen. Baxter is crazy, not foolish.” Harvey says in one clean sentence that seems to scoop up the entire reality of the situation. In any fight between them, Baxter will lose. That seems to settle for Baxter, who just mutters something and walks past us into the house.
“Now,” Harvey says, turning my face back to his with a gentle finger under my chin. “Can you talk to me?”
Lexhale. Would I be burdening him? He’s just become my boyfriend. I don’t want to overwhelm him, but I take a seat on one of the couches, and he comes to sit right next to me, his body angled toward mine.
“I need your help” I say and our faces are so close.
“What is it?” He leans in and kisses me. For a second, I let him so distracting and perfect, and soft, but then I remember why I’m here. I pull back with a slight frown
“Sorry.” Harvey says.

Chapter 47
“It’s about what happened to my dad.” I get up, pacing a little with my back to him before spinning around.

“The cops aren’t doing their job! My dad thinks it’s because theople who sent those gangs have connections. Isn’t that crazy?” I come back to sit.
This is the part where I take his hand in both of mine, “Can you help me? I’m sure in the casing, talks happen, right? It would be easy to get information about who did what and why you help me find out who did that to my dad? Is it some loan shark? I don’t believe it is. And it’s worse because…” I take aaky breath. “Someone has started stalking me.”
“What?” His posture goes rigid.
I pull out my phone and pass it to him so he can read the messages. “I saw this person standing outside my apartment building in the middle of the night. He asked me to go to my window to spot him, I did and he pointed at his screen. He wanted me to see him, to know he was watching. He said he knows who sent those people, but I think it’s a trick.”
I watch Harvey’s expression turn to stone as he reads. The easy comfort from a moment ago is gone. This is the Harvey everyone else is afraid of.
He takes his phone out of his pocket and immediately copies the number from my screen. I can see the way his eyebrows pull together, his focus even intensifies, and I blink, watching the shift in him.
“I’m going to block it from your phone now-” he starts, his thumb already moving.
“But-”
“You shouldn’t even be communicating with this person in the first place. They want to draw you out. It’s a stalking game. I’ll take care of it, alright?”
I nod, and a heavy exhale leaving my shoulders. At least Harvey going to help. The weight feels a little lighter. “Thank you.” I manage a small smile and bring myself to hug him again, burying my face in his chest and breathing in his cologne for a moment.
“How… how was your dad?”
“Much better. But it’s still horrible. He could have died, and I would have been in Italy, not knowing.” The anger bubbles back up. “That convenience store is his life, and someone decided to burn it to the ground. Harvey, what sort of monster…. demon, devil, bastard, serpent, wicked fellow would do that to a middle-aged man? I swear…” I put a hand over my eyes, falling back into my worrying spiral, forgetting for a second that he’s already handling it.
“I’ll tell the Prescott’s family’s chief of police to patrol your apartment building. They’ll know that if this guy comes around again, he’ll be arrested. That should scare this bastard off.”
I smile again, genuinely this time, and this time I’m the one who leans in to kiss him. Harvey looks pale for a second, but then his hand settles on my back, caressing me slowly. Just as the kiss deepens, we hear footsteps.
We break apart and turn. It’s Baxter, dragging his luggage.
I look back at Harvey, lowering my voice, “Oh, no….is he really going to stay and disturb us?” The way I say it, I immediately realize how it sounds and feel my cheeks heat.
“I wasn’t thinking that!” I blurt out, but Harvey’s already chuckling
“If you say so. And no, he’s not Harvey gets to his feet, Baxter is staring at me like he has something to say but knows he’s lost the right to say it.
“You wouldn’t even hear me if I live here-”
“Doesn’t matter, I don’t like you here. Call Rice, or Bryce… whatever his name is Last thing I want is you turning my house into a frat house.”
