Harvey comes back with a plate of the apple, now neatly cut into slices, and sets it on the coffee table in front of me. I just quietly on the couch. For one, the way he yelled at me… he’s new spoken to me like that before. And second, I know I nee to eat. But if I do, my brain will clear up, and I’ll be flooded with every single memory, every detail of what’s happened. Everyone’s been calling…even Dad came by and dropped off meds he cooked.

He didn’t talk about Harvey, but I felt so embarrassed. The guy was introducing to my dad turned out to be the last person I should have ever let near him.

“Come on.” Harvey says, his voice softer now.

I reach out and take a slice. When I place it in my mouth and bit down, it tastes… so good. Somehow, I’m able to chew. Maybe it’s because it’s Harvey who’s making me cat. When I was alone, I couldn’t bring myself to swallow anything, the energy it would give me felt like a betrayal, making it possible to relive everything with perfect, painful clarity.

“Another one.” He nudges the plate closer.

I take another.

“Take another.”

I do, until the plate is empty. He’s still watching me, his gaze intense.

“I’ve eaten. Can you leave now?”

“That’s not enough food,” he says. “I’ve ordered something else. should be here soon. Some soup, butter chicken…”

“Harvey-”

“And I’m going to watch you until you eat it all. Yes, you hate me I get it. I never said you shouldn’t. But I’m not going to let you starve yourself. Like I said.”

As if on cue, the doorbell rings. He holds my gaze for another serious second before getting up to answer it. He pays, brings the bags to the kitchen, and soon comes back with a plate piled with rice, naan bread, butter chicken, and a small bowl of what looks like beef stew. He sets a glass of water next to it on the couch, and even puts two drinks beside me-a milkshake and an iced lemonade.

My stomach lets out a traitorous grumble the second I look at it. Harvey’s face stays still, but I see the tiniest flicker at the corner of his mouth, like he’s trying not to smile.

He hands me a spoon.

“Come on. Dig in, or I’ll feed you.” He actually picks up a piece of naan, ready to make good on the threat. I grab the spoon

from him.

I start with the rice, then tear off a piece of naan, then go for the chicken, the stew… I’m eating so fast it’s almost frantic Harvey silently hands me the lemonade, and I sip it slowly through the straw, the cold tartness clears my palate. He watches until my plates are practically clean, then hands me a tissue.

I wipe my mouth, feeling a full sensation in my belly that’s equal parts relief and shame

Harvey rises to his feet. I try not to look at his height, his shape nothing. And I don’t want to hear his explanations. I’ve decided

He looks back at me. “What?”

“The key you used to get into my apartment. Don’t play dumb. don’t want you in here again. We’re not dating. You can’t just walk into my bathroom anymore.”

“But you weren’t eating.”

“I’ve eaten now. So at least I won’t die tonight.” I walk closer, holding my hand out. “Give it.”

“I can’t.” Harvey says and his face completely straight.

I scoff, disbelief turning to anger. “What, so you want to keep haing access to me? I don’t want a monster to have access to me! Don’t you understand that I feel unsafe? I’ll call the cops if you come near me again…what am I even saying?” A bitter laugh escapes me. “Call the cops. Oh wait, I’m sure they all answer to you anyway.”

“Really?” Harvey says quietly.

“Yes, Harvey. Really.”

I don’t wait for another lie. I step forward and start patting his pockets, searching for the key. He doesn’t stop me, but my hands come up empty. I slap his chest in frustration.

“Where’s the second key?”

“Jeremy gave it to me.”

“I didn’t give Jeremy the right to do that-”

“He’s worried.”

“I don’t care!”

“Jennifer!” His voice finally breaks in a sharp yell that echoes in the small space.

“Harvey, I hate you!” I scream it back.

That’s when I start pushing him. He’s a wall…bigger, stronger, taller but I don’t care. I shove against his chest with all my weight until his feet finally begin to move, stumbling backward out of my apartment and into the hallway.
