Chapter 61

Harvey Prescott.

I enter the Kings Casino with the echo of Jennifer’s voice is still ringing in my head: I hate you.

It’s a crazy thing to think about. Someone who told me a month ago that I wasn’t a monster would eventually look at me and see exactly that. So maybe I am the monster. Maybe that’s the truth I’ve been running from.

I haven’t even made it two steps onto the main floor before David is cutting toward me with a mayday look plastered on his face.

“Jenna is here!” he whispers, like it’s a state secret I should fear.

“And?”

“I didn’t know what to do. She came in with a pack of her influencer friends. They’ve booked out the entire Diamond floor, making videos. She’s been asking when you’d come in.” He hesitates, dropping his voice further. “How was it with Jennifer?”

“I’m single.” I brush past him and keep walking toward the private elevators.

“Single? Did she at least eat?”

“Yeah. But I have to check in again.” My hand goes to the breast pocket of my shirt, where the key to her apartment sits. A useless talisman if she actually goes through with changing the locks.

We step into the elevator. David hits a button for a floor I don’t bother to look at.

“What about Reign?” he asks.

“He did his turf. He should be off my back.”

“That’s where you’re fucking wrong! I saw a pack of his guys downstairs earlier, circling the block like vultures. You weren’t here last night, but I watched them. Motorcycles, the whole show. You beat him to a pulp. You think he’s going to pull back just because you and Jennifer are over?”

“Hmm.” I grunt, finally connecting the dots. On the jet, Reign mentioned coming down here to set up some new club or business. So that’s his play. He’s marking territory. Too bad I own this territory. He can step, or be stepped on.

“Harvey.” David says. “You realize you haven’t eaten either, right?”

I look at him, genuinely shocked. While I’m staring at him, I realize it’s true. I haven’t eaten. Just whiskey and bourbon. Is that why my chest feels hollow and weak?

“Yeah.” David confirms. “You were so focused on getting her to eat, you forgot to feed yourself.”

The elevator doors open to the Diamond floor. There are blinking lights, pulsing music, and a flock of people holding phones and cameras. And in the center of it all is Jenna.

She sees me the moment I step out. She snaps her fingers, and the music dies. She rises from the throne-like couch and walks toward me as the crowd parts. She’s wearing a white t-shirt as a dress and thigh-high boots. I know she came here to see me. That’s why she’s wearing the red lipstick. Some stupid compliment I gave her years ago has made her cling to it.

“Oh, boy,” she stops in front of me. “Do you look rough. When was the last time you slept? You’ve been so busy watching Jennifer, trying to make her see something that isn’t there, you’ve forgotten to take care of yourself?”

I turn my head slightly toward David. “Henceforth, she is banned from Kings Casino. She is not allowed to book, nor is she allowed past the doors.”

I know she hears me.

Jenna scoffs. “Is this how you treat high-paying customers?”

“Also, refund her money. To the very last cent. And get these idiots out of my casino.” I don’t even look at her friends as I say it.

I turn to go back to the elevator when her hand shoots out and closes around my forearm with surprising strength, stopping me.

“It’s obvious Jennifer is done with you!” she hisses. “I’ve never known you to cling to things that don’t want you. You know Jennifer doesn’t fit in our world.”

“Stop saying ‘our world. We don’t exist in the same space.” I keep my voice a deadly whisper, and she finally lets go

of my arm when she sees the feral anger in my eyes.

“Okay, your world, then but no matter how many flowers you send her, there will always be something about you that shows up to ruin it. Just spare her the trouble. Harvey, my dad is going to marry me off to some Don family brat. But if I’m with you, he won’t. He respects you-”

I let out a scoffing laugh and face her. “You think I give a shit about you or your arranged marriage? For all I care, get married to a hundred-year-old gizzard! Maybe he can fuck some sense into you.”

Jenna looks shocked to hear that I don’t care. She keeps going back to the time we slept together, and can’t seem to understand why there’s no lingering infatuation on my end.

It’s because there never was any to begin with. A depressed bastard fresh out of the army, who sleeps with the first girl whose name happens to be Jennifer, isn’t exactly starting from a place of clarity or connection.

“You don’t care!?”

“No,” I say, pushing the elevator button to leave this damn floor.

“Twenty times. That’s how many times we had sex. Ten of those times, I rode your cock like I was trying to break it. The other ten… you fucked me raw, pinned me down and buried yourself so deep I could taste you my throat. There’s no way you did all that and felt nothing. I refuse to believe it, Harvey. If you and I are together, my father will give you his support in anything. Think Italy. Think anywhere in the world. Think of being a god. You’d be untouchable…”

“Are you done?” Lask

“Being a Prescott is nothing compared to what my father can do for you! No one knows who will take over the Don ship. He doesn’t trust Reign because he takes too many risks. But a son-in-law… in our world, a son-in- law is a son, too. If we were to marry-”

“Jenna, if you like, remember how many times I buried myself in you. It won’t make a difference today. I don’t care what your father has to offer. Even if the reward was the entire goddamn world on a platter, I would still not be with you.”

Jenna’s eyes harden as I walk into the elevator regardless.

“You’re going to see me again, Harvey. I’m not giving up on you!”

*****

Jenna.

I look up at the apartment building. A Sky-high penthouse tower with hundreds of units. It’s the big leagues. Reign jams his hands in his pockets behind me as the movers from the company unload the truck. After blowing out a long stream of cigarette smoke, I guess it clears his vision enough for him to really see where we’re standing.

He looks at me. “This is Jennifer’s building.”

“Hmm, so you remember?” I chuckle, clicking the heel of my boot against the pavement and giving him my brightest, most innocent smile. Just last week, he helped me shop for chairs, a bed, clothes, kitchen things. I told him I’d gotten a new apartment, but I may have omitted the part about it being in Jennifer’s building.

Yeah. For some reason, I knew Harvey wouldn’t let go immediately…especially after how he looked at her on the curb where her coffee spilled. He was so close to her, anyone would have thought he wanted to kiss her right then and there.

Therefore, I just knew that if I stayed somewhere Jennifer could see me, she’d never forget the feeling of knowing I’m the one who’s always been intertwined with Harvey. The one who gave him his fist everything.

“Why the hell-” Reign starts with a pissed-off confusion.

“Why not? It’s a nice building.” I wave a hand dismissively. “They call it Ocean Rocks. I hear a lot of celebrities. lay low here, too. I thought it was perfect. I have exactly three months to live a semi-normal life here and get Harvey back before my dad makes good on his threat to marry me off to someone else.”

“You look pissed.” I note, tilting my head. “Are you feeling pity for her?”

“I don’t know her enough to pity her.” he grunts, taking another drag. “But I did land two harsh truths on her in one day. The girl’s probably not eating, and now you’re moving into the penthouse where she lives? It’s a bit much.”

“That’s what I need. You said you would help me with Harvey-”

“And I have. I said I’d get revenge on him for breaking your heart. I didn’t say I’d help you terrorize his ex.” Reign turns like he’s about to get back in his car.
