I warm her hand slowly, and though she’s been a fortress of stubborn anger, I guess I’ve finally caught her here. We’re just looking at each other. What exactly did I say that made the lion stop growling? I study her feathering lips, the pink flush high on her cheeks. I saw the quiver in her lips a moment ago; I knew she was about to sob that’s why I closed the distance, why I took her hand.

“I’m gonna to talk to your dad and ask for his forgiveness. I will do everything I can until he grants it. Baxter is gonna to tell you the part he played. Jeremy will do the same. And I’ll answer anything else you ask me.” I slowly lower my forehead until it rests against hers.

Jennifer blinks slowly.

“I know what we had might be gone forever.” I confess. “You gave me a chance, and I ruined it. I’m sorry. I wish it were different. There was so much I wanted us to do… but you know me, you say the word, and I disappear. But if you give me an inch. One small opening. And I will spend every second of my life earning my way back to you. But understand this: It’s you. or it’s no one. Jenna doesn’t exist in my heart.”

I let go of her hand after saying it. She just looks at me and after a moment of silence, I decide to circle back to what brought her here in frustration.

“So… she came to your workplace? With Nisha? For a job?”

“Never mind-“Jennifer says, as if I’ve stolen all the words from her mouth, and she tries to turn toward the door.

“Hey,” I stop her before she can take a step. “You can talk to me.”

“I don’t want to cause problems for the De Clair team. It’s just a few days of work, ending this weekend. However, you need to get her out of my apartment building.”

I want to say yes. I want to promise it. But the truth sticks in my throat. It’s not that simple. It’s not like I have jurisdiction over the building.

“What? You tell me she’s not special to you, and now you can’t do it?”

“It’s not that.” I sigh, running a hand through my hair. “Her father is a Don. And her brother is a gangster.”

“What the hell does that have to do with anything?” Her small face twists in confusion. It’s adorable, and under different circumstances, I’d smile.

“A Don is a regulator for mafia territories. Her father has connections. He’s influential. The surname Moretti is recognized everywhere. So, if she weren’t who she is, I could threaten her to move. But she is. And the repercussions from her family would touch everything I care about.” I say ‘care about’ while looking directly into her eyes.

“So she’s a spoiled brat?” Jennifer concludes with her nose scrunching up.

“Yeah.”

there

“No offense, Harvey, but I also don’t want you there,” She hisses it, but it comes out more like a pont. Another dann adorable thing

“Hmmm, let’s see” I walk to my desk and pour myself a glass of water, mostly to give my hands something to do. I’m thinking this is the first conversation we’re having where we aren’t screaming. It’s not as if she’s forgiven me or wants to work it out, but it’s something. We’re joining hands, and the one thing we have in common right now is Jenna,

“She has no weaknesses?” Jennifer asks, coming to stand a few feet away,

1 face her. Goddamn. How many weeks has it been since she called it off with me? It feels like I haven’t seen a woman before. The leggings she’s wearing curve her hips into the perfect shape of a peach, reminding me vividly of the temptations of her body, Her skin, that butterfly-soft skin, is doing numbers on my concentration. And her pertime… it reminds me of the short, glorious time we were practicing being lovers.

Is it bad that I’m thinking about how we made love on this very office table? Our last position here was in this chair. I held her waist and brought her down onto my length, watching myself pierce her, her ass bouncing against mine until I was spent. Then I bent her over the table and took her all over again, right to the core.

“I know something. It’ll work, but it’ll take time and reduce her antics while I figure out how to get her out.”

“Spill it. Ugh, I’m hot,” Jennifer says, and she takes off her sweater. Once that’s off her shoulders and her hair falls around her, I see she’s wearing a black wrap top that defines her waist in a way that tells anyone with eyes she has the kind of waist you can hold with one hand, She pushes the rest of her hair from her face, and l don’t even realize she’s looking at me until she clears her throat.

“Um.” I hold the glass of water a little tighter. She’s not going to like my idea because it literally takes us back to where we started. It’s stupid to even suggest it, but it feels like the strongest move right now. I’m not trying to fight Jenna head-on because one wrong word from me will put everyone I care about in danger. Dons love to hurt the loved ones of their targets. It’s their favourite lesson.

“Harvey, I’m waiting.”

“We pretend we got back together.” I drop it.

I see her blink. Good thing I’m the one holding the glass. I wouldn’t be surprised if she found something else to throw at me. Now I’m actually a little scared, because Jennifer is walking closer and closer, the pink sweater still balled in her arms.

“What?”

“Jen.”

“Continue. Say it, Harvey. Why are you so scared? Pretending that you were my boyfriend is what got us into this mess in the first place.” Her face is arranged in an unreadable expression, which is why I’m not sure if

she’s about to slap me again.

I take a cautious step back, just in case.

“Okay… let me explain.” I go to my desk and set the glass down. “If Jenna sees we’re together-despite the truth being out-she’ll realize that her attempts has failed. Like I said, she’s trying to bridge the gap. Imagine if we close it. She’ll run out of ideas. Sooner or later, she’ll accept her fate and use someone else… since she’s supposed to be married off by her dad anyway.”

“Married off?” Jennifer squints.

“Yeah. She’s come back with full force on me because she’s about to be married off. I think she has three months. She’s throwing everything she can at us to break us apart before that timeline is over.”

Jennifer’s face lifts into a scoffing smile.

“Ohhh…so we pretend to be seeing each other?” She raises one eyebrow.

I blink. All of a sudden, Jennifer looks like she’s actually considering it.

“Um….” I scratch the back of my head, wondering how my fucked-up idea is something she’s actually engaging with. “Yeah. To make the story believable, I guess.”

Jennifer still has that smile on her face.

“Oh, tell me, Harvey. What else do I have to do?” Now she starts walking toward me, and I find myself backing until the edge of my desk stops me. I’m speechless. I know the last thing she wants is to get personal with me again, not after how much she’s told me she hates me these past few weeks.
