I drive back to De Clair, and this time, I’m not in freaking tears. First off, I sit in my car and think about what I’ve just done.
Pretending to date Harvey again? Am I stupid?
Yes, maybe. But I swear, getting rid of his obsessive ex was all I could see in front of me. Her father is a “Don,” and while I don’t know much about that, if Harvey says he can’t just send her packing, it must mean real danger.
I almost scoff at myself. I hope he doesn’t think I’m giving him another chance. I’m only using him to fix what he’s brought into my life. Nothing else. I say it like I need to remind myself that this isn’t an actual relationship anymore.
I know what the real problem is… it’s him. It’s him taking my hand and asking why I would hurt it when I obviously used it to hit him. It’s him placing that hand on his chest and kissing it. It’s him putting his forehead on mine and speaking to me so softly.
It’s… I’m in love with Harvey.
I confess it in my heart, because my throat is too sore to say it out loud. I’m in love with him, and nothing that’s happened between us has even dented that feeling. If anything, I love him even more, and I’m not confused about it.
Where the hell are you!!! Alexa’s text pops up on my screen, and I finally snap out of it. I grab my bag from the passenger seat and get out, rushing back into the building. Max looks like he’s about to have a panic
attack.
“Where are they?”
“Shit, I could strangle you right now, but I’m scared of your ex!” Max hisses and hurries off. Oh, so they’re still in the reception resort.
I go to my office first, drop my keys, grab the file with the fabric swatches and sketches I’ve already been working on, and then take the lift up to the resort room.
Before I even reach the door, I can hear Nisha’s dumb voice.
“You realize you’re going to pay $300,000, right? The De Clair boutique may be the most talked-about thing because of my wedding, but it’s really going down the drain if Jennifer can’t separate work from her personal
life.”
I roll my eyes. No, De Clair became big because the dress I made was jaw dropping. My work.
“I’m here.” I enter, and Alexa looks at me like she’s just witnessed a miracle.

forehead crease in a slight frown.
Yeah. She can’t understand why I’m happy.
“Your mom married a rich guy?”
“Yeah. Do you like these colors?” I gesture to the palette on the screen.
“They’re fine.” She doesn’t even glance at them.
“Okay, let’s look at fabric.” I click to the next slide. Again, her eyes don’t follow.
“Those are good, too.”

“Hmm.” I nod, clicking through the styles. “These are the silhouettes I have in mind. You said you wanted hats, socks, everything from us. I have the perfect vision, and it’ll all be delivered to you before Saturday. We’re already working on bringing it together.”
“Amazing, Jennifer.” She says my name this time, drawing it out like she’s irritated. I look away from the projector light and she scoffs.
“You’re actually taking this well. I mean… I literally just appeared at your workplace. Is it really the coffee?”
“It’s the coffee. Plus, I’m just trying to move on.”
“Hmm.” She taps a finger on her chin. “Then, since the coffee is giving you that much-needed confidence, perhaps one of these days I should tell you how Harvey and I met.”
“You should.” My face stays perfectly serious. “And maybe one day, I’ll tell you about the life Harvey and I had through high school. We were close-knit. We did… honestly, everything together.” I let the memory warm my voice. “He even bought me a bra once.”
Her lips press into a thin line.
“Awn. Too bad… all those memories only to have it end here because he almost killed your dada. You have a soft heart, Jennifer, and it’s for boys like Baxter. I know a lot of them. I could get you their contacts. You’re pretty; they wouldn’t think twice about going out with you.”
“What, Jenna?” I try not to laugh. “After basically rubbing your past relationship with Harvey in my face, now you want to set me up? Do you like me that much?”
“No. I’m just speaking from Harvey’s point of view. Before he even came back for you, he felt like he didn’t deserve you. He wrestled with it because you’re… different. I’m from his world. You were his past, and it doesn’t reflect where he is right now.” She leans forward slightly. “Right now, he’s a casino owner. And believe me, what you know about Harvey is only a quarter of who he now is.”
This time, she gets up and starts coming closer. I stop talking and listen because I haven’t heard this before.
“A piece of advice from a girl from the mafia world to you…..a girl who makes pretty dresses. Dead that image you have of Harvey. You have no idea what he is at his core. My dad is-”
