“I’m glad you made it.” Jennifer says.

I was focused on only her as I walked in. Gorgeous in that yellow dress, the way it praises her butter skin and…no way on earth, I’m missing those oiled cleavages that are staring back at me. But as I look now…what the hell in confetti vomit is this gathering?

Pastel colors everywhere. Flowers in places flowers shouldn’t be Little umbrellas in cocktails. A string quartet playing something that sounds like elevator music for rich people who’ve never had a real problem in their lives. I’m pretty sure I just spotted a guy in seersucker. Seersucker. In public. Willingly

I hear someone clearing their throat behind me and Jen holds my arm so that we’re arm in arm.

“Put on your best smile.” She grits and lo and behold, it’s her mo. I’m guessing her name is Marie? She looks like she belongs in this gathering with that canopy hat on her head and that’s so then by all means she’s as worried as these women staring at me.

Shit, I should’ve worn white.

I let my hand out for a handshake. Uh, how I’m supposed to gree. The blonde-haired woman looks down at my tattooed hands and her eyes widen even more. Jennifer pulls back my hand.

“J-Jennifer?” She looks at her daughter.

“Mom, this is Harvey. I told you about him already, remember? Harvey Prescott.”

“The casino-”

“Owner. But he was also my best friend before that and…he was the one whose friendship got me away from feeling depressed after you and dad divorced. Just remember that.” Jennifer adds a bit of guilt-tripping.

“The one you broke up with.” Her mom dodges it.

“Yeah but now we’re back together…mom.”

“You’re back together!? I thought he did something unforgivable.

I look at Jennifer when her mom says that. Because now I wonder where I stand with what I did to her dad.

“Turns out it was forgivable after all. He…proved himself. Uh…Harvey, they’re doing a game.” Jennifer says and I give her my complete attention as she points me to the area where other males who are dressed in colored suits and bow ties are.

They look despicable.

“Jen you like this shit?”

“Harv-” She squeezes my hand and I completely forget that her mom is still in front of us. The table near her mom is filled with women who are giggling at me like high school teens.

Is that Jenna? Doesn’t even matter.

I head over to the line, fixing the sash that says Jennifer’s Date over my chest well enough as I assume the line with the other males.

“Wow, I know you guys are seeing the rough in the diamond that just walked into our midst.” The announcer says

everyone starts giggling…AT ME. The old ladies are blushing. I scan the line of females and find cheeks blushing, eyes fluttering at me too.

“FIRST GAME IS THE GAME OF CUPIDS. A GAME OF SHRINKING HEARTS AND SEEING WHO’S THE STRIKIEST OF THEM ALL…COME ALONG BOYS AND GIRLS.”

The staffs bring out multiple wheels that all have the love shape at the centre. They arrange arrows in front of us…oh now I get why they called them cupids.

“I know you…uh, sir.” The dude behind me says as I roll my sleeves. He looks like a trust fund kid. Probably been to my

casino.

“Where?”

“Kings Casino. You kind of got me out from a fight outside the club.” He chuckles nervously.

“Oh.” I nod. “I get a lot of people out of fights.”

“Um, Jason.” He smiles back and brings his hand so I give him a shake.

“Harvey.”

“So….you have five arrows in your cupid cups. How obsessed are you with your diamond? So obsessed you’re willing to concentrate and strike her with your love? We would love to see. Get all five or three arrow shots into the bulls eye and you’re in to the next level. You all have ten minutes. Diamonds you are allowed to cheer for your dates and the time begins now!”

A bell dings and everyone starts to throw.

I look at the wheel. Look at the arrow. Look at Jennifer standing on the other side, biting that lip in that yellow dress that’s catching the sun.

Arrows start pinging off the wheels and bouncing onto grass. Jason beside me throws. Hits somewhere near the edge and pumps his fist.

The bell hasn’t even finished ringing for two seconds and some idiot has already thrown his arrow into another contestant’s shoulder.

I watch it happen in slow motion as the victim screams. Medics rush in, and suddenly we’re all just standing here watching some dude get escorted off the line with an arrow sticking out of his shoulder like a bad prop from a medieval movie.

“That has to hurt.” I mutter, actually distracted for once.

Jason…still struggling nudges me with his elbow. “Bro, the time is going. You’re not gonna throw?”

I look up at the public timer. Five minutes gone and while dates are screaming for their dates. I catch Jennifer’s eyes across the lawn and she’s glaring a look that says: I didn’t bring you here to stand there with your hands in your pockets. Throw the goddamn arrow or I’ll throw one at you.

I almost smile. Almost.

I grab the first arrow, weigh it, aim for half a second and let it fly

Bullseye. Second arrow. Bull’s eye.

“YES!”

I hear her before I see her. Jennifer jumps up from the line and that beautiful face split open with the biggest smile I’ve ever seen. She’s clapping and cheering for me like a kid on Christmas morning.
