Harvey Prescott.

Contd.

Jason’s already pulls his off. The other guys are following, some flexing-

“Come on boys, take it off! Take it off! Take it off!”

The crowd chants now. Even the old ladies. Fuck, especially the old ladies. I start unbuttoning…one button at a time until it

comes off.

The screams that follow are not polite. The tea table behind the older ladies actually shifts as they stand up too fast. Champagne glasses and tea cups tips over as they are all staring me.

At my chest. My arms. My back. The ink that covers every inch of skin like a second layer.

“Whoa…your whole body is covered.” Jason states the obvious like a moron.

“Yeah. Kinda.”

I find Jennifer’s mom in the crowd of gaping women. Standing with her hand over her mouth. Is she horrified? Fascinated? Terrified? All of the above? She’s looking at me and she’s doing the math in her head.

This is the ink and the scars and the muscle that Jennifer chose.

“NOW, GET ON YOUR MATS AND GET SET. PRESS UPS! WE WANT TO SEE WHOSE MUSCLES CAN BE PUT TO WORK. THE LAST MAN STANDING IS THE WINNER. ONE. TWO. GO!”

I look at Jennifer one last time before I drop.

She’s biting her lip. Hard with look in her eyes that I know very, very well.

I hit the mat. A dude from the army does push ups for fun. Two hundred is a warm-up. Three hundred is a decent afternoon. Unless there’s a sergeant from my barracks days standing next to me pushing competition, this is a joke.

So I use the time to think about the Moretti situation. I spend the minutes running scenarios in my head-

“AND THAT’S THE WINNER!”

I look up.

Everyone’s staring at me while other guys are collapsed on their mats, gasping and sweating. Jason is face-down in the grass.

Glitter…or something like it rains down from above, catching the sun and falling over me like I’m some kind of champion.

Jennifer is clapping. Jumping again with a smile that could power the whole city.

So I flex a little and push my pecs up as the tattoos move with them. Jennifer’s face goes red in the best possible way with the

scream.

Put my shirt back on and another sash is presented to Jennifer. Diamond of something. I let her have the moment and walk toward her mom.

The older women part like I’m Moses and they’re the Red Sea. They look at me like I’m a sculpture in a museum…something to be admired from a distance, too dangerous to touch.

But that voice is very, very far away. I hold her there for another second. Two. Three. Then I drop her.
