Chapter 123 Choosing Sides
Sean drew in a long, steadying breath.

Zachariah assumed Sean had finally grasped how serious this was. He nodded and went on, “Sean, it’s best if you keep your distance from him for the time being. Mr. Solomon said that anyone connected to Evan will be investigated–”
“I’d like to see him try investigating me!”
The sudden roar cracked through the room like thunder, so loud that everyone’s ears rang.
“What?” Zachariah froze on the spot, wondering if he had misheard. ‘What did the mayor just say?’
“I’d thought it was something serious. So it’s just him stirring up trouble in Silverton again? He’s a retired noble, nothing more. Does he really think the entire world belongs to him?” Sean snorted. “If you won’t protect Evan, fine. I will. I’ll make it clear that Silverton isn’t his personal kingdom.”
It was extremely rare for Sean-the calm, respected mayor-to lose his temper, and the outburst left everyone stunned. Zachariah stared at him as if seeing a ghost.
‘The mayor’s going to protect Evan? Is he out of his mind? No-this isn’t just protection. This is openly opposing Mr. Solomon!’
“Evan, don’t worry about a thing,” Sean said, authority rolling off him. “In Silverton, my word still carries weight. Anyone who tries to lay a hand on you answers to me.”
“You’ll be fine, Evan,” Belinda added reassuringly. “Mr. Solomon is just another aristocrat. People used to humor him, call him ‘Mr. Solomon,’ and let him have his moment in the sun, but he can’t do whatever he wants.”
Evan finally understood the truth about someone of Cain’s rank-a brilliant family background, influence in the military, business, and political worlds, but not powerful enough to control the whole state. That was why three years ago, when Zachariah was just a deputy mayor, Cain had chosen to back off instead of pushing further.
“But Mr. Laurent, all of you…” Evan stared at them in disbelief. None of this made sense.
“Sir, aren’t you worried about the consequences?” Zachariah had to ask.
The Solomon family’s roots ran deep-their reach was long. One mayor alone shouldn’t have been able to withstand that kind of pressure. If this went wrong, even the Laurent family could get dragged under.
But Sean only smiled, calm again-almost amused. “Zachariah, my career won’t be affected. If anything, I might even get promoted because of this.”
He wasn’t just protecting a future son-in-law. He was choosing a side.
Even if Sean couldn’t shield Evan, what about the Iron Dragon behind him? That man was a mountain capable of crushing entire factions–and he owed Evan his life. How could he possibly stand by and watch?
