Knowing they had caused a disaster, the Vance family scattered like roaches, leaving only Maeve Vance standing outside the operating room to shoulder the burden.
Seeing the chaos, the hospital administration feared being held liable. They detained the fleeing Vance family at the front gates, hauling them into the security office before calling the police.
Once the cops arrived, the hospital readily handed over the security footage and witnesses. Every single member of the Vance family was hauled away for investigation.
Tessa Thorne offered to pick Summer up, but Summer refused.
"Tessa, don't come. Just stay with my mom. Tell my dad I'm on my way, I'm almost there!"
Summer borrowed a little cash from the police and hailed a taxi to the hospital.
Hearing the destination was a hospital, and seeing Summer's bloodshot eyes overflowing with tears, the kind-hearted driver gently tried to console her. "Sweetheart, family emergency? Don't panic. Good people have guardian angels, so I'm sure it'll be fine. You have to stay positive to get a positive outcome."
"Ma'am, can you please go a little faster?" Summer's voice was hoarse and broken.
"Sweetheart, I'm already flooring it. Any faster and I'll get pulled over."
"Please, I'm begging you. Go faster. I'll pay the tickets, I'll double your fare, I... I..." Summer sobbed uncontrollably. "I need to see my dad one last time."
The engine roared.
Gloria slammed on the gas, and the cab shot forward like a bullet. "Hang on tight, sweetheart. I'll get you there in record time. You'll definitely make it to see your dad."
The hospital entrance finally came into view. Summer had borrowed a few twenty-dollar bills, and she shoved every last bit of cash into Gloria's hands.
She knew it probably wasn't enough.
Gloria had run several red lights just for her.
"I'm so sorry, Gloria, this is all the cash I have. I swear I'll pay you back. I've memorized your name and number."
The taxi's dashboard displayed the driver's details, including her name, number, and the cab company.
Before the car even rolled to a complete stop, Summer threw the door open and bolted. Gloria's voice echoed behind her.
"Run! You're going to make it!"
I can do this, I have to make it!
The biting winter wind slashed against her face, but Summer felt completely numb to it. She just wanted to run faster, faster.
Inside the hospital room.
Tessa kept anxiously glancing out the doorway while Maeve sat by the bed, gripping Edward's hand for dear life. "Edward, hang in there. Our little girl is on her way, just hold on."
From the moment the incident happened yesterday until now, Maeve hadn't slept a wink. She had stayed right by Edward's side.
In a single night, her hair had turned mostly gray. Her posture had hunched, making her look as though she had aged a decade.
Edward's breathing grew weaker by the second. His eyes were filled with profound sorrow and reluctance to leave. "Your hair..."
He forced his trembling hand up, trying to touch Maeve's hair.
"Mom!"

Maeve had been pushing herself for far too long. The overwhelming trauma and the violent spike in her blood pressure caused her to collapse.
She had just recently undergone surgery herself, and combined with her age and underlying health conditions, it was a recipe for disaster.
The test results were grim.
The doctor reviewed the scans, his expression somber. "Ms. Vance, you need to brace yourself. There is a very high probability that your mother is going to suffer a stroke."
Tessa quickly wrapped an arm around Summer to steady her. "Summer, don't panic. Strokes can be treated."
Summer looked at her desperately, and Tessa nodded. "Trust me, I've never lied to you. I know a legendary doctor who is an absolute master of his craft. He's fully cured stroke patients before."
"Are you talking about Dr. Whitmore?"
"Yes, that's him."
"If you can get him, there's indeed a high chance of recovery." But what the doctor didn't mention was that the old man had been retired for years.
Tessa took five days of paid leave from the hospital to help Summer handle Edward's funeral arrangements and stay by her side.
Summer's current state was terrifying. Her eyes were bloodshot red, yet her face was paler than a ghost. She radiated a suffocating, chilling aura of despair.
