Substitute Wife, Genius CEO novel Chapter 152

Tessa was terrified she was going to have a breakdown. "Summer, maybe you should just cry it out."

But Summer had no tears left to shed. It felt as though every drop of moisture in her body had evaporated the exact moment her father died.

"I'm fine." Summer's voice was dry and raspy, sounding as if her throat had been scrubbed with sandpaper.

She glanced at Maeve, who was lying quietly in the hospital bed. "Tessa, could you stay here and watch my mom for me?"

Tessa nodded. Summer needed to go to the police station.

"At least eat something before you go."

Tessa practically forced Summer to choke down a piece of bread and a sip of milk before finally handing over her car keys and letting her leave.

At the precinct.

By the time Summer arrived, Sebastian Stone was already waiting for her by the front entrance.

As the two of them walked into the station, they bumped straight into Xavier Sterling.

Following Edward's death, the police had interrogated the Vance family, and Tiffany Miller had happily thrown Lily Sutton under the bus.

The police pulled the security footage from when Lily and Tiffany bumped into each other at the hospital, as well as the footage from the coffee shop.

They then summoned Lily to the station for questioning.

Xavier had come to accompany Lily.

Seeing Summer, he pocketed his phone and stepped into her path, his deep gaze sweeping over her. "Summer, Lily didn't do it on purpose."

Summer raised her bloodshot eyes, staring at him with eerie calmness.

She had thought that seeing them again would make her go insane, that she would want to slaughter the cheating bastards right then and there.

Yet, in this moment, she was chillingly composed. "Xavier, where is Leo?"

"Leo is at South Bay Manor."

Summer nodded. "I want to take him to my father's funeral."

"Alright," Xavier agreed, his intense gaze locking onto Summer. He reached out, wanting to pull her into a hug.

It made him inexplicably miserable, sparking a sudden urge to step forward and comfort her.

Miles pushed down the bizarre feeling and offered another earnest apology. "I am truly sorry. My sister honestly didn't mean any harm. If she had known your relatives were going there to cause a scene, she would never have helped them."

Just then, Lily walked out of the interrogation room.

Because Xavier had accompanied her, the police had treated her with extreme courtesy. They asked a few standard questions and immediately let her go.

It was a stark contrast to Summer's experience, where despite doing absolutely nothing wrong, she had been treated like a murderer and subjected to brutal, non-stop interrogations without even a chance to breathe.

"Xavier! Miles!"

Xavier turned to help Lily, but as he took a step, he seemed to remember something. He glanced back at Summer's haggard face and froze in his tracks.

Miles stepped up and supported Lily as they walked over.

Lily looked entirely apologetic. "I am so sorry, Summer. I really had no idea your relatives were that awful. I saw your cousin running around with a photo asking questions, and it looked so exhausting. I only stepped in out of the kindness of my heart. It was just an accident. My condolences."

Summer gave Lily a glacial stare before letting her gaze drop directly to Lily's stomach. "Lily, do you dare swear on the child in your womb that you really knew nothing? That you truly didn't do it on purpose? If you're lying, may the karma fall entirely on your baby. May your child be born riddled with disease, completely brain-dead, and mentally deficient. Do you dare make that oath?"
