Summer's revelation plunged the hall into stunned silence for a brief second.
Then, the entire room erupted. Confusion, fierce arguments...
Who was telling the truth?
What was the actual story?
Earlier, when Summer had emerged from Maeve's room, Maeve had handed her a few thick manila envelopes. They were packed with Edward's medical records.
A massive stack of them.
There were files from the county hospital, the city hospital, and even major hospitals in Empire City. Registration slips, payment receipts, and diagnostic reports—they were all there.
Fearing a misdiagnosis at the smaller local clinics, they had traveled to the major city hospitals, and eventually all the way to Empire City.
They had gone to Empire City hoping for a cure, but the doctors confirmed it was azoospermia.
Total infertility was very different from having a low sperm count.
With severe low sperm count, rigorous health management and medical conditioning still left a tiny chance for a miracle, exactly like Leo's existence.
Leo was like winning the lottery, a true blessing from above.
But azoospermia was entirely different. Edward's condition was caused by a congenital chromosomal defect. It was completely untreatable.
That was the entire reason they had adopted Summer in the first place.
As the villagers flipped through the medical records, realizing the massive misunderstanding, a wave of deep shame washed over them.
Edward had literally just been buried, and they had stood there dragging his name through the mud. Overwhelmed by guilt, the crowd collectively turned their anger toward Beulah.
Beulah couldn't read, but Tiffany could, and she read the reports out loud to her.
Panic finally seized Beulah. "No, that's impossible. How could my son be the one who couldn't have kids?"
A second later, she seemed to snap out of it, glaring at Summer like a cornered demon. "It was you! You forged these records! These are fake!"
Infuriated, Beulah grabbed the medical files and tried to rip them apart.
Summer watched her lose her mind with absolute calm. "Go ahead, tear them up. The hospitals have everything on file. The police can verify it with a simple phone call."
Beulah's hands froze. She stared at Summer. "Even if these tests are real, it's been over a decade! Maybe my son miraculously recovered. This boy is my son's flesh and blood! We have the paternity test to prove it!"
Summer completely ignored her and turned to the nearby officer. "The clinic's name is on that DNA report. Officer, could you please call them right now and have them cooperate with the investigation? Pull their records. I want to see exactly who stole my dad's identity to get this test done."
Beulah panicked completely. "No! You can't!"
Seeing Beulah's terrified reaction only fueled everyone's curiosity. Who had actually stolen his identity?
But she never could have imagined that Edward was infertile!
Not even his own mother knew. It showed just how fiercely Maeve had protected his secret.
It was also one of the many reasons Edward had loved Maeve so profoundly. When the car accident happened, his first instinct had been to shield her. Even at the cost of his own life, he made sure she was safe.
Summer had never known a couple more deeply in love than her parents.
Growing up in a home overflowing with that kind of love, Summer inherently knew how to love others with everything she had.
But she had poured all of that love onto a piece of trash.
Fortunately, she had cut her losses and walked away in time.
Beulah and Tiffany's father were taken away by the police for breaking and entering, attempting to forcefully extract Maeve's fingerprints, and attempting to steal bank accounts and property deeds.
However, Beulah had an extra charge added to her list: the fraudulent paternity test.
Tiffany, clever as always, managed to escape arrest because she hadn't actually entered the bedroom or rummaged through their belongings.
With that, nearly the entire Vance extended family was now sitting in a jail cell.
Once Beulah was dragged away, the villagers came up to Summer one by one, apologizing profusely.
