Since he was someone Lily had brought onto the team, she knew that if she didn't protect him now, no one would follow her in the future.
Lily turned to Xavier. "Xavier, you heard him. Toby didn't mean any harm. He was just looking out for Sterling Group. It's rare to find employees so utterly devoted to the company these days."
Then, she looked at Summer, her tone sickeningly sweet. "Summer, this is all just a misunderstanding. I know you've always been the bigger person. You wouldn't hold this against him, right?"
Summer let out a soft, mocking laugh. "Your employee deliberately embarrassed me in front of my boss. That's a slap in the face to my boss and a sign of blatant disrespect toward FutureTech Systems. Removing him from the team is a business decision for my company's sake. Ms. Sutton, this is no longer a personal matter. It's not something I can just brush off because you asked nicely."
Summer had effortlessly used their own logic against them.
Lily's face darkened.
Ignoring her, Summer turned her attention to Wesley Whitmore. Headaches like this belonged to the person running the show.
Summer smiled faintly. "Mr. Whitmore, since our first meeting, Sterling Group's people have done nothing but stir up trouble. Are you absolutely certain they're here to work on the project?"
Wesley rubbed his temples, his expression turning icy. "Mr. Sterling, the project has barely begun, and it's already devolved into a mess. Summer has compromised all day. She hasn't fought for anything and even gave up the team lead title to Director Sutton. What more do you want?"
Xavier frowned at him, but Wesley met his gaze with pure indifference.
At this point, none of the Sterling Group employees dared to breathe a word. If they got caught in the crossfire and kicked off the project, the loss would be catastrophic.
Ultimately, Wesley made the executive decision and expelled the offending employee from the project team.
With that dramatic disruption, the project team's inaugural dinner came to a hasty, uncomfortable end.

In the parking garage.
Harrison Banks was growing impatient. When he finally saw Gavin and Summer, he grumbled, "What took you two so long?"
Gavin let out a sigh. "We were ready to leave, but your new team lead decided to pick a fight with Summer."
Harrison was furious. "Why did the title go to her anyway? I didn't pick her; I wanted Summer."
"They didn't think I was capable enough," Summer said calmly. "They said I didn't deserve to be the lead."
Harrison barked out a laugh of pure outrage. "You? Not capable enough?!"
