Lily wasn't about to back down: [Summer, it's a completely reasonable suspicion. How could you possibly write a 300-page proposal in such a short amount of time?]
Summer: [Lead Sutton, the reality is this: I did, and you didn't. Just because you lack the skill doesn't give you the right to slander someone else. I guess it's true what they say—a dirty mind sees dirt everywhere.]
Summer: [Furthermore, by questioning me, you're questioning Professor Banks's professional judgment. Do you honestly think he didn't verify this before sending it out? Why do you think he shared it in the first place?]
Reading the exchange on his phone, Harrison chuckled softly. Exactly, he thought proudly. That's my protégé. Fearless, vicious, and utterly untouchable.
Who the hell did that homewrecker think she was? Did she really think she could fool him with that absolute garbage she had submitted? Reading her proposal had killed off half his brain cells!
It had been pure torture.
In her hospital room, Lily stared fixedly at the screen. Even though they weren't face-to-face, Summer's disdain, contempt, and merciless mockery hit her like physical slaps across the face, one after another, and she was entirely powerless to strike back.
Her proposal was indisputably inferior to Summer's.
She had no choice but to sit there and take the humiliation.
As for the rest of the team, she could only imagine the vicious things they were whispering about her in private.
How would they ever look at her with respect again?
The mere thought of it made Lily's expression contort, and a sharp spike of pain shot through her stomach, much worse than before.
Right on cue, her phone rang. It was the police.
"Is this Lily Sutton? Summer Vance has filed a report against you for intentional assault. Please come down to the station to assist with the investigation."
The phone slipped from Lily's fingers, and she curled into a tight, trembling ball on the bed.
"Lily!" Xavier panicked and slammed the emergency call button.
Lily gripped Xavier's hand with white-knuckle desperation, bursting into hysterical tears. "Xavier, Summer went to the police! She accused me of intentional assault! How could she do this?! She's the one who dragged me down!"
"Xavier, I hate her! I hate her so much! I want her dead!"
"I never want to see her face again! Make her go away, Xavier! Make her disappear, please! Xavier..."
"I feel sick, I want to die... I can't look at her anymore. I hate her. I hate her..."
