The moment Maeve saw Summer, the tears she had been holding back finally soaked her withered cheeks.
In just a short time, she had lost so much weight she was barely recognizable.
Summer couldn't imagine what it must have been like for her—alone in a foreign country, unable to speak the language, trapped in this cage.
"Smack!"
Summer slapped Xavier fiercely across the face.
"This is what you meant by arranging someone to take good care of her?!"
"Xavier, are you an animal?"
Xavier had nothing to say for himself. "I'm sorry."
He had arranged for someone to care for her, but he hadn't paid close attention. He threw money at the problem without overseeing it, and the local caretaker simply slacked off and did a negligent job.
Summer shoved the caretaker aside, personally changed Maeve's diaper, and gently wiped her clean, her voice choking with emotion. "Mom, I'm so sorry. I came too late. I made you suffer."
Maeve smiled and shook her head, wanting to say it wasn't too late, but her throat was so dry she couldn't make a sound.
The caretaker hadn't allowed her to drink water, because drinking meant she'd need to pee, and the caretaker didn't want to change her diaper.
Xavier ordered his men to take the caretaker away. Playing innocent, the woman spoke in her native language, "Sir, what is the meaning of this?"
Summer fired back in the same local language, "I can understand every word you're saying."
The caretaker's face drained of color. She had always relied on the fact that she spoke the local dialect, assuming no one could understand her insults, which gave her free rein to hurl abuse.
She never expected Summer to understand her perfectly.
Right now, Summer just wanted to take Maeve home; she was willing to agree to any condition, especially if it only meant working at Sterling Group for a year.
"I'm taking my mother away."
Xavier handed her the contract. "Sign it. Once you sign, I will personally escort you both back."
Summer signed her name without a second of hesitation. "Give me the divorce certificate."
Xavier pulled out Summer's copy of the divorce certificate.
Seeing the booklet, Summer's breath hitched, and she reached for it, but Xavier didn't let go immediately.
For some reason, at that very moment, a sudden wave of uncertainty washed over him.
Once he gave her this certificate, all ties between them would be completely severed.
Summer frowned deeply. "Xavier! Think about your precious sweetheart."
Snapping back to reality, Xavier released his grip.
The moment the divorce certificate landed in her hands, the heavy stone weighing on Summer's chest finally vanished.
She finally had the divorce certificate!
She was finally divorced!
From now on, she and Xavier would have absolutely nothing to do with each other!
If the timing hadn't been so inappropriate, she would have loved to post about it on social media to celebrate.
But right now, Maeve was the most important thing.
Summer carefully tucked the certificate into her bag.
She had originally planned to take Maeve back to the country immediately, but the severe weather and a raging blizzard forced the airport to close its runways, leaving them stranded abroad for the time being.
Summer meticulously cleaned Maeve's body, washed her hair, and dressed her in fresh, clean clothes.
Then, she headed to the kitchen herself, preparing a savory lean meat congee, steamed fish, a delicate shrimp ball soup, and braised ribs.
