Xavier slammed on the gas, and the car sped away into the night.
Yet Silas remained standing exactly where he was, watching the direction the car had disappeared.
Xavier pulled his gaze from the rearview mirror. "Silas is surprisingly devoted to you."
Summer said nothing.
"Change into the dress in the back seat. Later, when the old man asks, just tell him you were the one who got proposed to tonight."
Only then did Summer notice a bag in the back. Inside was an evening gown identical to the one Lily had worn.
However, the material of this one was noticeably inferior—it was just a knockoff.
But Summer didn't care anyway. She stated, "I'm transferring Leo's household registration to my name. When you go back, bring the registration book out for me."
Leo Sterling's registration was tied to the Sterling family's master household book. To transfer him, the original document was required.
Xavier tapped his fingers rhythmically against the steering wheel. "Grandpa holds the registration book. It won't be easy to get."
Seven years ago, Xavier had tricked Zelda Sterling into handing over the book, claiming he was going to register a marriage with Ms. Whitmore.
Instead, he took the book, married Summer, and moved his own registration onto a separate document.
Ever since that incident, the old man had kept the family registration under lock and key.
Summer's voice turned icy. "Xavier, I agreed to work at Sterling Group, but I can easily just sit there and do nothing. You can either fire me or endure watching me slack off and do nothing all day in the office."
Finally caving, Xavier said, "I'll do my best."
At the Sterling Estate.
Seeing Xavier return, Carlson Sterling was just about to start cursing him out when Summer beat him to the punch. "Grandpa, I was the one in the news tonight. We kept things so simple when we got married. Xavier felt he owed me, so to make up for my regrets, he planned this special proposal."
"Really?" Carlson was half-skeptical. "But looking at the photos, it looks awfully like Lily."
Summer smiled brightly. "Grandpa, that's just the angle of the camera."
With Summer personally verifying the story, Carlson finally let go of his suspicions.
Once Xavier's problem was handled, it was time for the household registration book. Summer shot Xavier a pointed look.
Just then, Xavier's phone buzzed. Summer caught a glimpse of the caller ID: "Wife."
Completely ignoring Summer, Xavier grabbed his phone and stepped aside to answer.
After hanging up, Xavier wore a grave expression. "Grandpa, there's an emergency at the company that needs my immediate attention. Summer and I have to go."
Without giving Summer a chance to react, Xavier grabbed her arm and dragged her out.
Summer twisted her ankle slightly in her high heels, and it continued to throb even after they got into the car.
The car drove out of the estate. Halfway down the road, it abruptly pulled over at a random bus stop. "Summer, get out."
Summer paused as she was rubbing her ankle. "Xavier, are you even human?"
