Xavier's voice was dark. "Name your price."
Summer raised an eyebrow. "I want my employment contract with Sterling Group terminated."
"Done."
Screech!
With an ear-piercing squeal of the brakes, the car slammed to a halt in the middle of nowhere. The door locks clicked open.
Summer turned to Xavier, a brilliant, mocking smile lighting up her face. "Our negotiation is over. Mr. Sterling, you can get out now."
Staring at her smiling face, Xavier once again truly realized just how vindictive Summer could be. Her thirst for payback was limitless.
After all this time, she still hadn't let it go.
Taking a deep breath, Xavier tried to explain patiently, "Summer, both of those times, I had real emergencies. I never deliberately abandoned you."
"Get out."
Xavier frowned deeply. "Summer, can't we just talk normally? Can't we just get along? Why have you become like this?"
"Get out."
His gaze turned as dark and cold as a stormy sea, but he didn't budge an inch.
Just then, Summer's phone rang. It was Silas.
Ignoring Xavier, she picked up. "Silas. Yeah, we're all done here. I'm heading back now. Wait for me. Yes, okay, I know."
Hearing the gentle smile in her voice, Xavier’s frown deepened.
While talking to Silas, even though the man couldn't see her, Summer's eyes had softened into a genuinely sweet smile.
Hanging up, Summer turned back to Xavier, her face instantly turning to ice. "Are you still here? I'm heading over to my boyfriend's place. Are you planning to third-wheel at his house?"
Xavier never imagined a day would come when he would be the one kicked to the curb.
Summer floored the gas pedal, and the car vanished into the night. At that exact moment, the heavens opened up, and the rain began to pour.
For the first time in his life, he realized just how freezing a winter downpour could be.
After dumping Xavier on the street, Summer called Silas back.
The moment the call connected, Silas chuckled. "When are you getting here? I'm still waiting."
Summer laughed apologetically. "Xavier was in my car just now. I only said that to force him out. Sorry, so sorry."
"Anyway, what did you need?"
Silas's voice suddenly turned grave. "My grandfather collapsed today."
Shocked, Summer quickly asked, "Is Grandpa Alaric okay?"
"Not really," Silas replied, his tone heavy and defeated. "The malignant tumor he had removed previously... it relapsed and metastasized."
Summer's heart sank right along with his. "Is there anything I can do to help?"
"Summer..."
