Lily's hand tightened abruptly. Tomorrow, she was going to legally change her name.
Summer couldn't have been happier. The mere thought of Lily monopolizing her rightful name made her sick to her stomach.
That name had been irrevocably tainted by Lily's filth anyway.
This worked out perfectly. Summer didn't even have to say a word or lift a finger.
A short while later, the staff announced dinner.
At the dining table, Lily feigned concern, asking about Summer's interview at the Sutton Group.
Lydia chimed in with equal fake sweetness, "Have you started working at the company yet?"
The two of them played their parts flawlessly, acting as though they had no idea Summer had failed the interview.
Summer didn't let the pressure get to her. She just smiled. "The company's hiring standards are quite high. I didn't get the job."
Lydia offered false comfort, passing her a side dish. "That's alright. Maybe that particular position just wasn't a good fit."
Summer stared at the food Lydia had served her without touching it. "Of course it's alright with me. A project of mine is about to be completed, and it's highly likely to win an award. If the company doesn't want me, it's their loss."
With that, Summer shot a look of mock pity at Bennett at the head of the table. "Bennett, your brilliant HR director just cost you an unprecedented tsunami of media exposure and a massive fortune. I hope you can hold it together when the time comes. Don't be upset. Money is just a fleeting illusion, after all."
Lily didn't believe a word of it. Winning an award wasn't something you could just manifest by speaking it out loud.
It wasn't that easy.
Besides, even if the FutureTech Systems project won, the glory would belong to FutureTech. What did it have to do with Summer?
She really thought she was somebody special.
Thinking this, Lily put on a patronizing mask of helpfulness. "Summer, winning an award isn't a walk in the park. It's fine if you want to brag about it at home, but don't go saying things like that outside. People will laugh at your delusions."
Xavier served Lily a slice of roast, lazily lifting his gaze to look at Summer. "Aren't you afraid of choking on your own words, Summer? Do you think your family owns the judging panel? You don't just win an award because you say so."
Summer took a bite of the salmon Miles had served her, offering a mild smile. "Everyone, just wait for the good news. I truly hope you can all remain this composed when the time comes."
After dinner, Summer didn't stick around. She returned to FutureTech Systems to work overtime.
In the following days, she returned to the Sutton residence for dinner a few more times, keeping up with their Saturday night family dinner tradition.
Every single time, Lily would bring up the award at the table, and the entire Sutton family would wait to see her make a fool of herself.
On one occasion, Julian happened to be dining with them. He scoffed loudly at the mention of the award. "Summer, are you suffering from delusions?"
Feeling quite pleased with his own logic, he pressed on. "I heard psychological issues are hereditary. Your mom is a lunatic, right? Maybe you're a psycho too."
Julian's careless words caused a lightbulb to go off in Lydia's head.
She cast a thoughtful glance at Summer. Why hadn't she thought of this before?
Mental instability could be passed down to children.
