Lily's eyes darkened for a split second, but she quickly masked it, greeting him with her usual bright smile. "You're home, Miles."
Miles's heart and mind were entirely focused on Summer. Whether he didn't hear her or simply chose not to acknowledge her, he didn't reply.
Instead, he ordered the maids to fetch medical ointment and personally began massaging Summer's swollen ankle.
He knelt on the floor, his movements skilled and his pressure absolutely perfect.
"Thank you."
Miles looked up at her, his smile gentle and utterly devoted. "Silly girl, I'm your brother. Taking care of you is my job. You don't ever need to thank me."
Lily watched this glaring display, her fingernails unconsciously digging into her palms.
Her brother used to only treat her this well!
Why? Just because Summer was his biological sister?!
Why wasn't he even sparing her a single glance anymore?
Now, his heart and his eyes were completely filled with Summer. Wherever Summer was, his gaze followed.
He was like a sunflower, constantly turning to face the sun.
But she used to be his little sun!
Could years of companionship really be erased by a few fleeting childhood memories?
Lily simply couldn't accept this sudden drop in status.
Just like years ago in the States, she couldn't stand seeing Miles date Xenia Young. She couldn't bear him giving half the time and energy that rightfully belonged to her to someone else.
She had long considered Miles's doting affection as her exclusive, private property.
So now, seeing him dote on Summer felt incredibly abrasive. It was unbearable, breeding deep-seated anger and resentment.
Noticing the shift in Lily's mood, Xavier frowned and cast a dark look toward the two of them in the distance before coaxing Lily upstairs to their room.
Half an hour later, Xavier came back down and asked Miles to step outside for a private chat.
Xavier offered Miles a cigarette, but Miles waved it off. "I quit. Summer hates the smell of smoke. She prefers things clean."
He had noticed it himself. Every time Summer caught a whiff of smoke, she would subtly frown. Even though she never said anything, he knew she hated it.
So he quit. He wanted to be the kind of brother Summer loved.
Xavier let out a light chuckle and shook his head. "You're playing the role of the perfect brother, but you're being incredibly cruel to Lily. Miles, Lily is your sister too. Aren't you being way too biased? Have you even considered how Lily feels?"
