...behind closed doors, everyone assumed it was her doing.
It was highly likely Xavier would try to pressure Wesley as a form of retaliation.
So, the moment her project wrapped up, she begged Harrison to make the request without mentioning Maeve's name, claiming it was for a relative.
She accurately predicted that Wesley would respect Professor Banks and the bond they formed while collaborating on the project enough to say yes.
It took Wesley an hour to finish Maeve's acupuncture session.
Summer had gone down to the living room to brew some tea, respectfully serving Harriet first, then Harrison, and finally Wesley.
"Dr. Whitmore, thank you again for treating my mother."
Wesley took a sip and nodded. His phone buzzed with a notification—Summer had wired him funds with the note: *Lab Project Investment.*
She had already transferred hundreds of millions of dollars to him once before.
This time, it was another massive sum.
Knowing she had walked away from her divorce with Xavier with a fortune, Wesley didn't try to politely decline. If his clinical trials succeeded, Summer would see a massive return on investment anyway.
Given the late hour, Wesley only stayed a little longer before standing up to leave. "Professor Banks, I'll see you at the award ceremony tomorrow."
Harrison nodded. "Drive safe."
After seeing Wesley out, Summer went back upstairs to chat with Maeve for a bit before finally heading out herself.
As Summer drove out of the military estate, a black car idling down the street quietly slipped into traffic behind her.
The driver kept one hand on the wheel while speaking into his phone. "Drake, the people who live in that neighborhood are heavy hitters. This woman has serious connections. Are we really moving forward with this?"
The man on the other end paused for a few seconds. "Keep tailing her. Wait for my signal."
At an exclusive private club.
Julian was playing poker with his arm around a young model when his phone rang. The model obligingly answered it and held it to his ear.
"Summer's background isn't as simple as we thought. The price just went up."
Julian took the cigar out of his mouth, letting out a dismissive scoff. "Bullshit. Don't try to shake me down."
"She just left the military estate. You and I both know the kind of power the people living there hold."
"Impossible!" Julian snapped instantly. "She's a country bumpkin with a paralyzed mother. Where the hell would she get connections like that?"
"And so what if she went in there? Does that mean she's best friends with the generals? Maybe she was just running an errand or delivering paperwork. Since when did Drake become such a coward? Stop scaring yourself."
Julian was on a winning streak tonight and didn't want to ruin the mood by arguing. "Whatever. I'll add another hundred grand. Does that work for you? You better hurry the hell up. It's been weeks—can you handle this or not? If you can't, I'll call your rivals."
Drake was annoyed but kept his temper in check to explain. "The woman is a workaholic. She practically lives at the office. She's been holed up there for over two weeks, eating, sleeping, and working. Tonight is the first time we've actually had a window."
And then they watched her drive straight into a military fortress.
