Miles took two steps forward. Leila opened her arms, and he pulled her into a tight hug.
Leila patted his back gently, just like she did when he was a child.
A profound sense of grounding and peace washed over Miles; it felt exactly like coming home.
Leila kept a golden-and-white rescue dog at the estate. The mutt was lively, cheerful, and incredibly endearing.
Leila smiled and rubbed the dog's head. "His name is Lucky."
Lucky circled Leila twice before curiously sniffing around Summer and Miles.
Leila took Miles on a tour of her vegetable garden.
Miles remained mostly silent. His heart was a churning tempest of regret, guilt, agony, joy, and confusion.
But seeing Leila alive, in good health, and visibly thriving in spirit was a balm to his soul.
From the bottom of his heart, he was overjoyed.
After touring the garden, the three of them harvested some fresh vegetables to take back.
Leila was in high spirits. "Miles, it's been ages since you've had my cooking. Let me make you a homemade dinner tonight."
Miles stopped her. "Let me cook, Leila. Let me treat you and Summer to my culinary skills. Neither of you has ever tasted my cooking."
He had honed his cooking skills specifically for Lily Sutton. When he accompanied Lily abroad years ago, she couldn't stomach Western food, so he intentionally learned how to cook.
Now, it was time to let Leila and his real sister enjoy the fruits of his labor.
After dinner, Leila brought out a tea set.
Summer took it from her hands. "Mom, let me."
Leila patted Miles on the arm and said, "Miles, you must be incredibly curious. Let me tell you exactly what happened..."
Leila recounted the entire story, detailing the cause and effect from start to finish.
Although Summer already knew the truth, hearing Leila recount the betrayals of the past still ignited a fiery rage within her.
Hearing the truth made Miles's heart ache so deeply he felt he might die.
The woman he respected most, and the sister he loved most, had both been deeply harmed by his own uncle and the mother-daughter duo, Lydia and Lilith.
Yet, he had foolishly trusted that homewrecking pair over Leila.
He had actually helped Lilith torment his own sister, spewing cruel, hurtful words and committing vicious acts.
Miles's eyes turned bloodshot, brimming with pure agony. His body slowly folded in on itself as he buried his face in his hands, his voice choking out in jagged sobs while his shoulders shook.
"I'm so sorry, Leila. I'm so sorry. It's my fault. I was stupid, blind, and useless. Why didn't I believe you? Why didn't I notice sooner? I failed to protect you, and I hurt my sister."
Weeping, Miles collapsed to his knees in front of Leila. He raised his hand and struck his own jaw hard. "I'm so sorry. I disappointed you."
A sharp slap echoed through the room.
Blood oozed from the corner of Miles's mouth.
