Lilith and that abused woman had absolutely struck some kind of backroom deal.
Someone as vicious as Lilith didn't possess an ounce of human empathy. Lending money just because she saw someone crying? Only a fool would believe that.
But what was even more infuriating was Xavier.
As Leo's biological father, he had the utter audacity to parade the woman who orchestrated his son's maiming right up to his hospital bed.
It was the ultimate psychological torture!
Look at how brightly Lilith was smiling. God only knew how smug she felt on the inside.
Dammit, Tessa wanted to march over and rip that fake face right off her skull.
"It's okay, Leo," Lilith cooed, reaching out to stroke the boy's head. "Even if you can't hear a thing, you can always get a cochlear implant."
"Lilith!" Tessa snapped, her patience shattering as she forcefully shoved Lilith away. "What the hell are you smiling at? What's so damn funny?! You're absolutely thrilled Leo ended up like this, aren't you? You're probably dying to set off a few fireworks to celebrate."
Lilith stumbled backward. Xavier immediately rushed forward, catching her by the waist and shielding her protectively against his chest.
Looking utterly terrified, the color drained from Lilith's face. "I'm so sorry. I didn't mean anything by it. I just thought that instead of moping around with a long face, it's better to smile. A patient's mood is so important for recovery. Who knows, maybe one day a miracle will happen and Leo will be cured."
Tessa roared, "Leo is in this state because of you! Stop playing the saint. Just looking at you makes me sick."
Xavier barked a cold, sharp warning. "Tessa! If you don't understand the law, go consult your lawyer about the penalties for criminal defamation!"
Summer pulled Tessa behind her. "Xavier, take your woman and leave."
Xavier's brow furrowed tightly. "Summer, Leo is my son too."
Summer met his gaze without a shred of fear. "I have full custody of Leo!"
A chilling smirk touched Xavier's lips, and his words were colder than ice. "If I want custody, I can take it back whenever I please."
With that, Xavier led Lilith out of the hospital room.
If Summer hadn't physically restrained her, Tessa would have charged forward and beaten Xavier senseless.
She had absolutely despised Miles before, but after seeing the viral video of him pummeling Xavier, she decided she didn't hate him quite as much anymore.
Because she really wanted to throw a punch too!
"Aunt Tessa," Leo called out. Because he couldn't hear himself, his voice sounded abnormal—the volume and pitch were awkwardly distorted.
Tessa looked back and saw the deep concern in his young eyes.
Realizing her explosive outburst had terrified the boy, her heart broke all over again.
She rushed back to the bed and wrapped her arms gently around him. "I'm so sorry. Auntie didn't mean to scare you."
Summer walked up behind them and wrapped her arms around both of them.
Two weeks later.
The investigation into Miles concluded, confirming he had absolutely no relationship with Misty Lane.
