Lilith refused to believe it. She scrambled for her phone, desperate to call Xavier.
But right there on her screen, dominating the trending news, was the official press release from the Sterling Group.
There was no need to ask.
Lilith gritted her teeth so hard her jaw ached, her fingers white-knuckling her phone. Xavier had resigned from the Sterling Group, and he hadn't even bothered to tell her.
He couldn't even give her a simple phone call.
And now, an entire boardroom full of executives was watching her become the punchline to a joke!
Dexter chuckled darkly. "I assume you've seen the news, Director Sutton. I highly recommend you follow your husband's example—prioritize the big picture and step down voluntarily. If you force the board to vote you out, it's going to be incredibly humiliating for you."
The other board members nodded in unison, their piercing gazes locked onto Lilith.
This was a corporate coup. They were forcing her out.
But she refused to accept it!
She had just clawed her way to the Acting CEO position. Before she could even make her mark, they wanted to kick her out in disgrace? It was far too humiliating!
Moreover, once a person tasted the absolute power and privilege that came with authority, they could never voluntarily let it go.
"And what if I refuse to resign?"
Dexter's sneer deepened. "If you refuse to step down gracefully, then don't blame us for getting ugly."
*Bang!*
Just then, the boardroom doors were pushed violently open.
Scarlett wheeled Bennett Sutton into the room, stopping right beside Lilith.
Dexter frowned. "Mr. Sutton, this company belongs to everyone. The Sutton Group reached its current heights because all of us poured our blood and sweat into it. We expect you to put the company's survival first. The facts are undeniable: Lilith Sutton is unfit to be the Acting CEO."
The other board members murmured in agreement.
Lilith was so furious she felt her teeth might shatter, but she had absolutely no counterargument. She had barely taken the seat, and the company had already been dragged through two massive PR nightmares.
That was an indisputable fact.
