Xavier shoved her aside. "Move."

"Xavier!" Lydia grabbed his arm, her voice cracking with desperation. "Just give me a minute. I’ll get on my knees, I’m begging you."

Lydia dropped heavily to her knees on the linoleum floor.

Xavier stared down at her with dead eyes. "Get up."

But since Xavier didn't walk out, Lydia stayed on the floor, speaking rapidly. "You know Lilith has been severely ill. Besides the depression, she was diagnosed with Fregoli Delusion."

Xavier furrowed his brow. "Delusion?"

Lydia nodded frantically. "In the beginning, she would see men who vaguely resembled you and genuinely believe they were you. As the sickness worsened, she began seeing total strangers and fully believed you had disguised yourself, altering your appearance to hide from your family just so you could secretly visit her in the States."

Xavier found the explanation completely absurd. "And? So she just hallucinates that random men are me and sleeps with them?"

Lydia waved her hands defensively. "No, no! We monitored her constantly. It only happened once or twice when she managed to slip away."

Xavier let out a hollow, mocking laugh. "Once or twice?"

Lydia continued, "Years ago, when she found out Summer was pregnant, the psychological trauma broke her. She was utterly devastated and snuck out to drink. We searched everywhere for her. By the time we found her, the damage was done... and she slit her wrists."

Xavier remembered that day. When he had received the call about Lilith’s suicide attempt, he had been beside himself with panic.

Carlson had just come out of major surgery and was still in critical condition, but Xavier had abandoned his dying grandfather and flown halfway across the world.

He had stayed by her hospital bed, caring for her every need for half a month. He never imagined the truth behind her suicide attempt was this twisted.

Xavier laughed coldly. So Hunter Sutton wasn't his either.

Taking a slow, ragged breath, Xavier asked, "And this time? What was the excuse this time?"

Lydia rushed to explain, "Julian Hawthorne told her you were throwing a massive wedding for Summer. It triggered a severe relapse. She started calling out your name to every man she saw. We took turns watching her around the clock."

"But one day, I had horrible food poisoning. I looked away for a second, and she bolted. She went out drinking, and the alcohol made the delusions completely uncontrollable."

"When she sobered up and realized what she had done, the agony was too much. She went on a hunger strike. She tried to jump off a building. I had absolutely no other choice. I took her to a psychiatric specialist and we used hypnotherapy to alter her memories."
