Summer was surrounded by her closest friends: Tessa Thorne, Vivian West, Jude Montgomery, and Miles Sutton.

Hearing her mention settling a score, everyone cast wary glances at Xavier.

Xavier reeked of alcohol, his expression dark and brooding. It was obvious he had drank too much, his eyes completely bloodshot.

He was clearly unhinged, capable of doing something crazy at any moment.

Miles frowned. "Settle what score?"

Summer shrugged. "Severe oligospermia. I kept it from Mr. Sterling for years, and now he's furious. He thinks it's all my fault, so he wants to settle the score!"

Tessa's face twisted in disgust. "What right does a cheating bastard like you have to be angry? Summer didn't tell you back then because she wanted to protect your fragile male ego. She didn't want you to feel burdened or think you couldn't be cured."

"Later, Summer went out of her way to find a renowned specialist living in a remote area just to get you medicine. I was so worried about her going alone that I tagged along. It was pouring rain, the trail was pure mud, and she nearly slipped off a cliff. If I hadn't been there, she would have died out there."

"And what happened? You refused to drink the medicine she risked her life to get. So Summer got some supplements for herself and drank them with you just to keep you company. She constantly smelled like bitter herbs back then."

"Xavier, if you had a shred of conscience, you wouldn't have done such a shameless thing, let alone come here looking for a fight. Fine, bring it on. Who's scared of you!"

Tessa was practically spitting fire, rolling up her sleeves as if ready to throw a punch.

Vivian pulled her back down to her seat. "Why reason with a dog? If he had any sense, he would have acted like a decent human being instead of a stray. If he dares touch Summer, I'll end him."

Xavier's mind flashed back to a few years ago, remembering the times Summer had begged him to drink that medicine with her.

Back then, Julian Hawthorne had mocked him, calling Summer a dramatic country girl who needed her hand held just to take a supplement.

It turned out the medicine hadn't been for Summer at all. It had been for him.

He remembered how Summer constantly made him take those pills, banned him from smoking and drinking, set a strict ten o'clock curfew, and forced him to be in bed by ten-thirty every night.

Every morning, she would drag him out of bed to work out, claiming that getting fit would improve his sperm quality and help them conceive sooner.

It turned out all the clues had been there all along.

And it was shortly after that strict regimen that Summer actually got pregnant.

Xavier said coldly, "You still shouldn't have kept it from me. I had a right to know. If you had told me, I would have followed the doctor's orders perfectly."

He would have taken the medicine, slept early, woken up early, and sworn off alcohol and cigarettes.

If he had just stuck with it, he would have been cured by now.
