"Get in or don't. If you don't, I'm leaving." Summer Vance turned the key in the ignition, bringing the engine to life.
Lily Sutton remained firmly seated in the passenger side, leaving Xavier Sterling no choice but to carry Hunter Sutton into the backseat.
Oh, right. There was also a wolf in the backseat.
The wolf had followed Summer into the car.
Now, it excitedly nudged its massive head toward the driver's seat, trying to reach her.
Summer clicked her tongue and shot a glare at Lily. "Control your wolf. It's annoying."
Fang seemed to understand. He let out a pitiful, wronged whine, still trying to inch closer to Summer.
Xavier's voice was sharp. "Fang!"
Only then did the wolf retreat, sitting obediently on the leather upholstery. But his eyes remained stubbornly locked on Summer, practically oozing a tragic, lovelorn longing.
How could a wolf have so many facial expressions?
Had the beast somehow gained human sentience?
Summer slammed her foot on the gas, and the car shot forward like an arrow released from a bow.
"Summer!" Xavier roared. "Slow down! Lily is pregnant!"
Before his sentence even ended, Summer accelerated.
The engine roared.
The car darted through the lanes like a nimble fish.
Even late at night, the main roads were packed with traffic. Multiple times, Summer merged aggressively, missing the neighboring cars by mere inches.
The entire ride was a thrilling, adrenaline-fueled nightmare.
Horns blared in an endless cacophony, overlapping with the furious shouts of other drivers tearing through the night.
"Are you rushing to your grave?! You think you own the road just because you drive a luxury car?! Try me, I'll ram right into you!"
Summer rolled down her window and yelled back, "Sorry! There's a pregnant woman in the car, she's about to die!"
Xavier was so angry he bellowed, "Summer, what is wrong with you?! Pull over!"
Hunter burst into terrified tears, burying his face into Xavier's chest. "Is the wicked witch trying to kill us?!"
"She's so evil, wahhh..."
Fang happily howled from the back, clearly enjoying the ride.
The cabin was entirely too chaotic. Summer hit a button, raising the privacy partition.
Summer feigned innocence. "Then why are you so anxious?"
Xavier's face darkened further. He gritted his teeth. "It's a human life!"
Summer raised an eyebrow. "Don't I know that? I just saw how weak she was, couldn't even walk. They say saving a life is the greatest virtue. I didn't dare waste a single second, so I rushed her here at top speed. You don't have to thank me, but blaming me? What kind of logic is that?"
Xavier didn't argue further. He scooped Lily into his arms and sprinted toward the hospital entrance, ordering the bodyguard to grab Hunter.
Once they were gone, Summer finally noticed the wolf sitting by her feet.
She looked down. Fang looked up. Human and wolf locked eyes.
The night breeze swept past. Summer pointed toward the fading figures in the distance. "Can't you see? Your owner left. Go on, shoo!"
Fang rubbed his massive head against her pant leg.
Summer clicked her tongue. "Don't try to act cute. You're a wolf, not a dog."
Fang wagged his tail, staring at her with wide, pleading black eyes.
"I'm not taking care of you!" Summer turned to walk away.
Fang immediately clamped his jaws gently around her pant leg, whining pitifully.
