Miles Sutton handed her a cup of warm milk. "So he really mistook his savior's identity?"
"Yeah," Summer murmured, taking a small sip of the milk. She pulled the curtains shut, preferring out of sight, out of mind.
Miles asked curiously, "Do you really not remember?"
Summer shook her head.
If she had remembered, she would have recognized Xavier and Paige Brooks the moment she first saw them.
Summer walked over to the sofa and looked at Maeve Vance.
Maeve continued knitting and said, "When the massive fire broke out at the orphanage back then, a lot of children died. The director died too."
"Summer ran a fever of 104 degrees that night. It went up and down for days before she finally recovered."
"After she woke up, we vaguely brought up the orphanage, but we realized she had forgotten it all herself. We were worried that remembering would only bring her pain, so we rarely ever mentioned the orphanage again."
Miles nodded. "It might be the body's natural defense mechanism. If you want to remember, we could try psychological intervention."
Summer shook her head. "No need. Things are perfectly fine the way they are."
Leila walked over to the window, pulling the curtain back slightly to peek outside. The rain was coming down harder now, and Xavier was still slumped out there.
She asked Summer, "Are we just going to ignore him?"
Maeve huffed angrily, "Why should we care about that ungrateful jerk? Let him stay out there. He deserves it."
"I'm just worried he'll die on our doorstep. That would be a terrible omen," Leila said, dropping the curtain. "If he wants to grovel, he should go do it further away."
Summer replied, "It's fine. He has bodyguards. We don't need to worry about him."
They truly didn't spare Xavier another thought. The heavy rain poured down outside, while inside, the house remained bright and cozy.
Miles played chess with Leo Vance, Maeve and Leila knitted together, and Summer went into the study to catch up on some work.
Out in the torrential downpour, Xavier watched as the lights in the villa flicked off one by one. From beginning to end, Summer never once came out to check on him.
Did Summer truly not want him anymore?
In that moment, the freezing rain felt as though it were pouring directly into his heart. It was so, so cold.
