The company had been trending negatively all morning. Another scandal involving law enforcement would be devastating.
The financial and reputational fallout would be apocalyptic.
Under no circumstances could she be allowed to make that call.
But Paige's frantic kick missed the phone and slammed directly into Summer's mangled hand.
"Ah—"
Summer gasped, the veins in her forehead throbbing. "Paige! Xavier just dislocated my arm, his mistress intentionally crushed my fingers, and you just assaulted me again. You're all guilty of aggravated battery. Give me one good reason why I shouldn't call the police!"
"Summer!" Paige glared at her with unbridled fury. "You assaulted Lily first, I saw it with my own eyes! If anyone's getting charged with battery, it's you! And another thing,"
Consumed by rage, Paige blurted out, "Lily is not his mistress!"
She was the love of his life!
Years ago, at the orphanage, after Lily had saved Xavier's life, the two had shared a profound bond. They were deeply in love.
He had promised that when they grew up, he would marry her and cherish her forever.
Paige and her brothers had ridden Lily's coattails out of poverty. When the orphanage burned down, it was Xavier who found them and funded their education.
Paige had excelled academically, graduated from a top university, and became his executive assistant.
Her brothers, Dante and Derek, hadn't been as sharp, but they had the physical build, so they became his personal bodyguards.
The four of them had all grown up together in that same orphanage.
That shared history was precisely why the two bodyguards had unflinchingly obeyed Lily's silent commands to brutalize Summer.
And right now, Paige was fiercely defending Lily with everything she had.
Of course, Summer had no idea about this deep-rooted loyalty. She assumed Paige was just acting on Xavier's orders.
Just another extension of his blind devotion to Lily.
It would make it infinitely harder for the two of them to get married and finally be together openly.
Driven to the edge, Paige made a ruthless decision. She violently restrained Summer, tying her up until Xavier could return and deal with her.
Summer's left shoulder was already severely dislocated. Being aggressively wrestled and bound behind her back exacerbated the horrifying injury, sending black spots dancing across her vision.
Fighting off waves of blinding nausea, she gritted out, "Let me go! This is illegal detention!"
"Untie me right now, my arm is broken, I need a hospital!"
"Paige!"
"You better pray you kill me, because if I get out of here, I swear I will end you..."
Her voice grew fainter and weaker, until she finally surrendered to the excruciating pain and passed out completely.
Lily feigned concern. "Are you sure she's okay? She really looks like she fainted."
