Reginald’s POV

With Lillian trapped inside of a necklace, which, I was quickly informed, could not just be destroyed to break her free, I found myself often visiting the library of this kingdom to try to help hunt for answers. I’d already sent letters back to my own kingdom to have the scholars search for answers there. Maybe I should have returned myself, but I was loathe to leave my cousin in such a state.

The best I could do right now was search through the library and pray to the Moon Goddess.

“I hate feeling this useless,” I said to Princess Josephine, who had joined me.

“Me, too,” she said, softly.

We searched through the stacks, and I was glad for her quiet companionship at my side. While I hated feeling useless, sharing the weight of that feeling with another was slightly more tolerable.

“Lily is one of the strongest people I know,” Josie said. “She is waiting for us to find an answer.”

“I will not have her waiting forever,” I said with a frustrated huff. “But that’s the problem, isn’t it? I’m at the mercy of whatever we find in these books. Which so far has been nothing.”

“There has to be something here,” Josie said. “That necklace didn’t appear from just nowhere, and my mother found the knowledge somewhere.”

“Maybe she destroyed what she found, so she was the only one to know.”

“It’s possible,” Josie said, worrying her bottom lip. She went quiet for a while as we continued searching, but my gaze kept wandering to her, mostly out of concern. The books here were all useless anyway.

“You found your father’s diary,” I said. “You’ve been reading it, I’m sure. Have you uncovered anything there?”

“Some,” she said cryptically. “Nothing about the necklace, but some about my mother. She was a servant of the house when Grayson’s mother died. My father needed comfort, and he found it.”

“Your mother is ambitious. She likely jumped on the opportunity to win the King’s love.”

“Yes…”

She was holding back. I looked at her.

With only that look, she cracked. “I’m not sure the opportunity was by chance.”

I lifted a brow. “You think your mother had something to do with the death of your father’s first wife?”

“Father doesn’t write much about her servant duties, but that she’s able to be so near the royal family tells me she had access.” Josie hung her head. “I don’t want to suspect these things, but knowing the kind of woman my mother is now… Did she change to become this woman? Or has she always been this monstrous and just hid it better?”

“You appear to be her one soft spot.”

“That only makes me feel more wretched. Because I had her kindness, I was blind to how she treated everyone else. She even had me doubting Grayson, a little.”

Sensing the self-defeat in her voice, I turned to her. She did the same to me, but her head was still lowered, her eyes on the ground. That wouldn’t do, not for a princess.

Reaching my hand up, I gently cupped her cheek and urged her to look up at me. She did so, her eyes wide, her cheeks dusted a beautiful shade of pink.

“We are not our parents,” I said. “We do not harbor their faults.”

“I should have known she was this way…”
