Grayson’s POV

As the hammer dropped, my entire life with Lily, every single moment we shared, passed before my eyes. The moments were too few. We needed so many more.

Lillian.

I love you.

The hammer hit the pendant and a flash of light blinded me. A sear pain shot through me, down my arm and to my

heart.

A shockwave hit me, sending me flying backwards and down to the dirt.

Everything hurt, but still, I kept my love for Lily at the front of my thoughts, hoping it would be like a guiding light, leading her back to me.

Lily.

Please.

I couldn’t breathe.

Lillian’s POV

I waited, anticipating the moment my prison would shift and change. Grayson had already explained his plan with the hammer. I knew, soon, I would have to act as well, pushing back as the hammer fell, fighting my own way to

freedom.

There were no guarantees it would work, but I was determined to return to my family, my friends, my children, Grayson…

I had so many people to live for.

So I waited, readying myself.

Then, the world around me shuddered violently, and I knew it was time.

“Grayson!” I called out aloud.

A wind picked up, rushing around me, destroying everything – the flowers, the trees, even the grass at my feet. The fog was closing in like a whirlwind. The light was so bright, I had to squeeze my eyes against it.

“Grayson!” I screamed.

Then, everything slowed. I couldn’t even hear my heartbeats anymore.

The world was dimming, darkening, like everything was fading away.

Was I dying?

Was I already dead?

No.

I couldn’t allow this. I wouldn’t succumb here. I had too much to live for. My kids. Grayson. My whole life was ahead of me yet. I wouldn’t just give up and let go.

I would fight.

Like my ancestors before me. Teacher.

I carried the blood of one of the original werewolves in my veins. That gave me power.

As did my love for my mate and my children.

I wasn’t going to die here. I didn’t care if I had to fight the carrier of death themselves.

“Grayson!!” I screamed at the top of my lungs, into the silence.

I reached out with my heart and – there. I could feel him. The tug of the bond between us, like a lighthouse, guiding me home. I grabbed onto the bond and followed it, shuffling blindly through the bright light.

I’m coming, Grayson. Don’t let go.

Like a phantom touch, I could feel his arms around me, like he was leading me, keeping me going, giving me some of his strength.

My legs were wobbly, my weakness nearly overwhelming. I fell to my knees but continued to crawl.

Nothing would keep me from returning. I would not stay prisoner a moment longer.

I had to keep fighting. Keep pushing.

Grayson!

I couldn’t speak anymore.

Grayson’s POV

Some of my bones were broken, I was sure of it. Blinking a few times, the bright lights finally started to dim until I was staring up at a blue, cloudless sky.

Did it work?

Groaning, I pushed myself up. The anvil was there.

The others had been hit with the shockwave too, but seemed okay. Reginald was helping Josephine up. Prime Beta was already on his feet.

Lily wasn’t here.

Ignoring my own pain, I pulled myself to my feet and shuffled forward toward the anvil. The necklace was there, but it was only barely cracked.

“No,

” I whispered. Then louder, my pain made manifest in my roar, “No!”

The others stood nearby now, watching, but not daring to come closer.

Where was the hammer? Maybe it needed another hit.

My bones crackled as they popped back into place, growing, fixing themselves. It hurt, but nothing compared the black hole forming in my heart.

Where was the damn hammer?

There. It was on the ground nearby. I grabbed it and hauled it back to the anvil.

“Grayson,” Josie started to say, attempting to step forward, but Reginald put his arm around her and held her back..

I lifted the hammer, and brought it down again.

This time, there was no blinding light. No shockwave. No searing pain. Just the clang of a hammer to metal. Again and again, I hit the pendant, until it was nothing but shattered, broken pieces. Then I hit those too, just in case.

The black hole inside of me stretched farther, all encompassing.

I’d failed.

I’d failed her, and our children. And myself.

Anguish formed inside of me like a dark cloud. Tossing the hammer aside, I started hitting the broken pendant shards with my bare hands.

“Give. Her. Back!” I screamed. “Give her back to me!”

I heaved, everything hurting. My bones, my heart, my lungs, my bleeding hands.

In a broken whisper, I said, “Give her back…”

I closed my eyes. I could see her there in my mind. My Lillian. My beautiful fighter.

I reached out a hand to her, surprised when it felt like she took it. Then, I pulled, and she moved closer, as if coming through time and space. I opened my eyes again and, impossibly, she was there, falling into me.

I stumbled, my arms suddenly full of her, flesh and blood and alive.

“Lily?”

I didn’t know how it was possible, but I wouldn’t question it.

“I’m here,” she said, breathless, her eyes filled with wonder that must have matched my own. “I’m free.”

The how didn’t matter, not with her in my arms now.

“I felt our bond,” she said. “I followed it… to you.”

“It worked,” I said.

“It worked,” she agreed.

What more could be said that wasn’t already felt between our two hearts.

I lowered my lips to hers, eagerly tasting her in the flesh. No more dream worlds or magic prisons. This was reality.

She was here.

Her arms went around my neck, as I slid mine around her waist. We each clung to each other desperately, holding

close.
