Chapter 349
Grayson’s POV
“I still don’t like that you talked to her without me,” I said to my sister. “She could have tried to hurt you.’
“It was a necessary risk,” Josephine said.
“I was right outside the cell,” Reginald said. “I was ready to jump in if necessary.”
“Still.”
“If the information she gave is good, then it was worth the risk,” Josephine said. “Lillian would have done the same for me.”
I hummed, knowing she was right. I didn’t like it though.
Until Lillian was out of the necklace prison, however, I didn’t think anything would make me happy.
Prime Beta stopped our car in front the finest artisan blacksmith in the kingdom. While we had hired many blacksmiths to help suit and maintain our armies, they were more familiar with working quickly and in mass quantities. They didn’t consider themselves artists, though when asked, they all recommended the man whose shop we now stood in front of.
I got out of the car first, with the others following. Prime Beta joined us too. He’d called ahead, so we were met at the door by a young woman
“Dad’s waiting for you by the furnace,” she said. “I’m Sue.”
Greetings went around and then she led us back into the heart of the store, where an older, burly man with a thick beard sat between an anvil and a fiery furnace. The fire burned around him like a glow.
“There you are, Prince Grayson,” he said, his voice as grizzled as the rest of him. “Er, King Grayson. Apologies.”
I nodded. “Artisan Diego. You come highly recommended. Your artistry is well-known.”
“You don’t have to inflate my ego, son,” Diego said. “Just tell me what you need. I’m guessing this isn’t an order for a new sword, with how secretive and urgent all this is.”
“No,” I said. I’d worn the necklace since I’d come into possession of it, with the pendant hanging near my heart. Now, after sizing up this man, and watching him size me up back, I unhooked the clasp, and then placed the necklace on the anvil in front of Diego.
Diego looked down at it, and then leaned forward.
He hummed. “Well, now. What have we here.”
“Have you ever seen anything like this before?” Josephine asked.
“Perhaps.” Diego lifted his hands. He glanced at me. “May I?”
“Gently,” I said.
Carefully, he picked up the pendant. He peered at the front and then carefully turned it over to look at the back. “I’ve read about designs like this, but I’ve never seen this. They don’t make things like this anymore. This craftsmanship… Not just steel, but magic… Most people don’t even believe in magic nowadays. They’ve forgotten all about the old ways. But not me… And I’m training my girl. Sue will be as good a blacksmith as me. She’s

already half-way there. Too many people have forgotten…”
saw something then and paused. “Ah. It’s a prison.” He glanced up at me again, peering at me through his gray curling eyebrows. “And it’s occupied.”
“The love of my life is trapped in there,” I said, laying my heart bare. This man wanted me to be straightforward, and I couldn’t be more so than that. “There is nothing I won’t do to have her back.”
“Please,” Josephine added. “We don’t know where else to turn.”
He looked between us. “These prisons were designed for one purpose, and one purpose only. To hold someone prisoner forever. The magic was only ever supposed to be used one way.
“I refuse to accept that,” I said. “I will not lose my mate to such magic.”
“The magic will not bend to you simply because you are Alpha, or King.
“Then I will find some other way to bend it.”
Diego studied me again, for a longer time. He seemed to be searching for something in me. I stared back, hiding nothing.
After a moment, he said, “Sue. The hammer.”
“You clearly love her,” Diego said. “Love has power. Use it.”
Sue disappeared into a back room and returned holding a large blacksmith hammer. It seemed simple, black and solid, with a strong wooden handle. She handed it to Diego, who, after accepting it with both hands, held it out for me instead.
“If she loves you, and reaches for you with all of her strength from inside the necklace, while you reach for her. As the hammer falls, you may find each other. If you falter she will be lost.”
I accepted the hammer with full confidence. “We love each other. This will work.”
It had to. Lily was not going to survive for long in the prison.
I looked down at the hammer. It seemed so… usual.
“Will you be able to do it?” Reginald asked. “Perhaps I should try.”
“No,” I said. “If anyone is to take this risk, it has to be me.”
Reginald looked like he wanted to argue, but Josie touched his arm and fell silent.
I gripped the hammer with both hands.
“I’ll need to share the plan with her,” I said. “To gain her consent. If I can see her again in my dreams…”
“Sharing dreams is a good sign,” Diego said. He carefully lifted the pendant and handed it back to me. For now, Reginald took hold of the hammer while I returned the necklace around my neck, hiding the pendant beneath my shirt, close to my heart.
Lillian’s POV
I sat on the front porch swing beside my mother, rocking back and forth. My hands were in my lap, but my mother was knitting. I was getting weaker. It was growing more difficult to keep my eyes open all the time, but even with my eyes closed, I could hear the gently clack of Mom’s knitting needles and felt the comfort of her presence at my

side.
Mom said, and my heart ached at how softly she said my name. It sounded like a goodbye, and I already knew that was because it was one.
“I’m sorry,” I said. “I’m getting too weak…”
“You have to let me go,” she said: “It’s straining you to keep me here, and you need all of your strength to hold on for Grayson. He’ll find a way to save you…
“I’ve already lost you once,” I said miserably. “How am I supposed to let you go
