Chapter 348
wanted this woman protected from all hurt, including emotional.
What a perplexing feeling. Why should I care? I liked Josephine enough, but her life was her own. Her choices, her
own.
“I will go with you,” I still said, my own confusion feelings stubbornly rising within me.
“She won’t talk with you in the room,” she said.
“Then I will stand outside of it,” I insisted. “I will not have you face this entirely alone.”
A look of wonder crossed over her, but she didn’t argue or press. I was glad because I had no explanation to defend, myself with.
“Alright,” she said, and I breathed out, relieved in a way I couldn’t explain.
Josephine’s POV
Reginald walked with me to the dungeons, then stood outside the cell as one of the guards unlocked the door to allow me inside. His face was hard, his expression guarded, but his presence did more for my confidence than I could have ever dreamed. Somehow facing my mother felt easier, knowing he was just outside the door. When I entered the cell, my mother was sitting on the bed, staring lifelessly at the far wall. For a moment, I thought maybe she had died sitting upright, but as I came closer, she blinked and looked at me.
For a moment, a flash of recognition revived her, but with a blink, the wash of defeat returned.
“You shouldn’t have come here,” she said. “I don’t want you to see me like this.”
“I had to come,” I said. “You know why.”
“Everyone cares so much for that girl.”
“Lillian is a dear friend,” I said. “She’s like a sister, and Grayson is in love with her.”
She scoffed lightly. “I don’t care what Grayson thinks.”
“She’s always been kind to me, mother. I don’t like the thought of her being locked in there.”
“She’s fine.”
“Do you know that? Do you really know?”
Mother looked away. “The Lone Archer survived, didn’t he?”
“He’s one of the original werewolves,” I said. “Lillian is not.’
My mother sighed. “I don’t know what you want from me, Josephine.”
“You must know how to free her from the prison.” I took an insistent step forward. “We’ve searched the libraries, but can’t find any information. But you know, don’t you? You knew how to trap her, knew the incantation. There has to be one to get her out.”
She was quiet.
Swallowing hard, I admitted, “I’ve been reading Father’s journals.”

That claimed her attention again.
don’t know all that happened back then,” I said. “But I do know he loved you. It’s there in every page, every word. I don’t know your feelings, but his were clear. He saw in you a worthy of his love.”
“Josephine…”
“Mom, please. If you know a way to help Lily, I’m begging you, tell me. You are still the Mom I know, despite everything. I want to believe there is good in you.”
“Oh, Josephine…” she said sadly.
My heart hurt. Was she going to send me away?
She sighed. “I don’t know how to open the prison. The guide I was given only ever spoke of how to imprison, not release. I don’t even know if there is a way to open it.”
My breath caught, my hope dimming. She was being honest, I could tell this time.
