Camila could see how shaken her parents were. Her eyes stung, but she held back her tears and tried to keep things light. “Yeah, you two shouldn’t worry so much. Dennis has found a bunch of medical experts. I’m going to be fine, I promise. I could never leave you guys. No way.”
Her mom, Melissa, squeezed her hand and forced a smile. “Alright, your dad and I will do whatever you say.” She hugged Camila tightly, her arms trembling a little, then glanced at Dennis with grateful eyes. “Thank you again, Dennis. I don’t know what we’d do without you. If it weren’t for your help, I can’t even imagine how much worse things would be for Camila.”
Life had thrown a lot at their daughter. Still, Melissa was relieved Camila had someone like Dennis. So many people turn their backs when things get tough, but he was still here, steady as ever. Every trial they’d faced together made his loyalty and kindness even clearer.
Dennis shook his head, guilt flickering across his face. “I just hope you don’t blame me for not taking better care of her.”
Melissa and Jerry could never blame him. “This isn’t your fault,” Melissa said softly. “You’ve already done so much for Camila and for Lillian. Way more than we could ever ask for.”
Little by little, Camila’s parents found their footing again. Melissa squeezed Camila’s hand and said in a gentle voice, “Don’t be scared, honey. We’re right here with you, no matter what. We’ll get through this together. You’re going to be okay.”
Jerry nodded. “You’ve come through so many hard times before. This one will pass too.”
Camila smiled at them, her voice steady. “Yeah, I believe that. Everything’s going to work out.”
Later that night, Sarah Brown and Larry Adams headed home. During the drive, Sarah hardly said a word. She just stared out the window, lost in thought.
Larry noticed right away and reached over to give her hand a gentle squeeze. “Hey, what’s wrong? You look really upset.”
