Swapping a Broken Heart for a New Start novel Chapter 1312

Just as he was about to leave, Camila’s hand caught his wrist. He looked back, surprised, and saw her smiling at him from the hospital bed. The softness in her eyes made his heart ache.

“What’s the rush?” Camila’s voice was scratchy after so many days asleep, but the warmth in it was unmistakable. “I wasn’t finished. You’re my Dennis. How could I ever forget you? I remember everything now.”

Even though talking clearly took effort, she pushed through, determined to say every word. Dennis stood frozen for a beat, his controlled, cool expression suddenly breaking apart. Emotions flickered across his face so quickly he looked almost unrecognizable.

He stared at her, as if afraid he’d just imagined everything. But her smile was real, and his doubts slipped away. The calm in his eyes crumbled, replaced by a rush of color she’d never seen before.

Camila had never seen him like this. She’d started to tease, but just watching his reaction swept all the playfulness away. Her chest tightened. She reached out, apologetic and a little alarmed. “I’m sorry. Did I scare you?”

He didn’t answer. Instead, Dennis leaned down, hugging her tight, holding her against his chest like he was terrified she’d disappear if he let go even for a second.

He didn’t say a word, but Camila could feel how desperately he loved her. She couldn’t help but smile a little, finally understanding how hard this must have been for him.

She must have been in that treatment room for so long. He couldn’t come in, could only wait outside and worry. The torment he must have felt… just thinking about it made her heart twist. She remembered how startled he’d been when she woke up, how he’d immediately checked on her, and she realized he probably hadn’t slept at all last night.

Her own arms found his shoulders and she hugged him back. “I told you I’d be okay. I didn’t lie, did I?”

She rested her cheek against him, her voice gentler. “I promised you forever. I meant it. We still have a lifetime ahead, and I won’t ever go back on my word. There’s so much more I want to do with you, so much I want to tell you.”

She heard herself start to laugh quietly, breathless. “Dennis, I love you. I love you so much… I want to get better, marry you, and throw the biggest wedding anyone’s ever seen.”

Dennis went perfectly still, as if her words had knocked the breath out of him. He stayed like that for a long moment, silent.

Finally, his voice rasped out, low and close to her ear. “Good girl, Camila. Just keep being you. I love you too.”

The good news sent a wave of happiness through the entire lab. All the worry and dread from the last few months disappeared in an instant.

Dennis’s happiness lingered, even as he settled down again. He glanced over at Mr. Morris, who was still grinning like he’d won the lottery, and asked, “So, when can Camila come home?”

Mr. Morris just laughed. “No need to rush. We’ll keep her here for another week to be safe, just to make sure everything’s stable. If there’s no sign of problems, she’ll be free to go home.”

Abner Young looked like he was trying not to bounce with excitement. The antidote’s success wasn’t just a personal miracle, it was a huge leap forward for their research.

Camila had recovered so quickly, no one had time to let her family or friends know what was happening. By the time anyone got the news, she was already deep in treatment. They hadn’t been allowed in, so all they could do was wait anxiously from afar.

As soon as the news was official, Dennis was the first to tell everyone.
