Isabelle sensed a certain familiarity in their conversation–it felt as though they were old friends who had known each other for many years.
But Caroline’s calm, measured tone had always been that way.
Old friends didn’t know her recent life; new acquaintances didn’t know her past. Recent matters weren’t for the old to know; the past wasn’t shared with the new.
Joy and sorrow were carried alone–others could hardly fully understand.
Isabelle didn’t like seeing her like this. Caroline ought to pursue the people and things she loved, not lock herself away in a place where no one could enter and she couldn’t leave.
“Caroline, my mother has returned to the country as well. She asked me to send her regards and wondered when you might be free to have dinner together,” Collin said, gently breaking the lingering silence.
Caroline lifted her eyes, which held years of quiet composure, and looked at him.
Linda had been her only close friend abroad, and they had remained in touch. Caroline knew she had returned, but they simply hadn’t managed to meet up yet.
“Once Isabelle is feeling a little better, we should all arrange something,” Caroline replied, not refusing the offer.
“Then we won’t take up any more of your time today. We heard you were up very late last night. Isabelle needs her rest too, so please don’t overexert yourself.”
Collin’s words were thoughtful and considerate.
“Of course,” Caroline smiled softly.
She had always been fond of Collin.
Collin stood up, his gaze shifting from Caroline to Isabelle..
“Remember to call if you need anything,” he said with a warm smile.
Isabelle was quiet for a couple of seconds before giving a soft, “Mm.”
She still hadn’t properly thanked him for what happened last time–thinking about it now, she felt a bit remiss.
While enjoying the dessert Damian had brought by that afternoon, Isabelle came across the

day’s trending news.
Sean’s body had been found by police–by the river in a remote, abandoned village.

There wasn’t a single part of him left intact. According to the report, his fingers had been crushed, his nails torn out, and the inside of his thighs brutally beaten. By the time he was discovered, his face was already unrecognizable.
It was a horrific sight.
Isabelle turned off her phone screen, too unsettled to keep reading. The description alone was enough to ruin one’s appetite.
The police hadn’t identified any suspects–the scene had been wiped clean.
It didn’t look like the work of one person; it seemed organized and deliberate.
As for Celeste, she was already in custody. With each piece of evidence laid out before her, she could no longer deny her involvement.
Her mother, Keira, had fallen ill upon hearing the tragic news and now had no one to care for her.
Isabelle looked at the man now tidying the tulips beside her bed. “Sean’s situation… that really wasn’t you, was it?”
He picked out the tulips Collin had brought and tossed them into the nearby waste bin, then carefully refreshed the water for the remaining flowers.
When he’d learned that Collin and Griffin had come to visit, he’d returned to the hospital without delay.
He had only finished half of his scheduled work, leaving the rest to Brian.
And Brian, currently busy helping Diana at the studio, couldn’t be bothered with paperwork
anyway.
Work could wait–pursuing someone couldn’t.
Money could be earned later, but if you missed your chance with the right person, she might be gone for good.
“Murder and arson are felonies–I wouldn’t dare,” Damian said evenly as he dried his hands.
How could he admit to it? In front of his wife, he could only be upstanding and reliable. This was not a line he would cross—or at least, not own up to..

Isabelle studied his expression while finishing her dessert.
Damian tilted his head to look at her. “What’s that look for?”
Isabelle gave a light, knowing laugh and didn’t
press further.

At the same time, in the Tucker family’s formal study,
Jaxson Tucker sat stiffly in a high–backed chair, his gaze cold as he watched Sophia forced to stand rigidly before the family. There wasn’t a trace of leniency in his eyes–his expression was sharp as thorns, sweeping over everyone present. 3
Beside Jaxson were Camellia and Eric, neither of whom dared to speak up in Sophia’s defense.
Jonathan stood with his hands in his pockets, his posture utterly detached.
Sophia had been standing under scrutiny since the night before. Her legs were trembling with fatigue by now, and having not eaten, her pale lips were dry and cracked.
She braced her hands lightly on the edge of a heavy oak table, trying to shift her weight off her aching feet. Her wrists trembled faintly, and even the small muscles along her jawline quivered.
