When they arrived at the hospital, Jonathan and the others hadn’t shown up yet. Christian went to check on Abigail’s room first–a private nurse was attending to her, and her condition was stable, which put him somewhat at ease.
After reminding Abigail a few times to rest well and avoid any stress, he headed to the adjacent room to see Isabelle.
“Grandpa,” Damian greeted him.
“Grandpa, you didn’t have to come all this way,” Isabelle said. She had just finished her dessert and was resting in bed. Most of her color had returned, though the wound on her leg still throbbed dully.
“If I hadn’t come, you’d all assume I was already six feet under. Something this serious happens, and nobody tells me—I had to hear it through the grapevine.” Christian was so annoyed his cheeks flushed.
Isabelle looked at the indignant old man and couldn’t help a soft smile.
Growing up, she’d rarely had a paternal figure show this kind of concern for her. Feeling that care now warmed something deep inside.
“Grandpa, you’re far from ready for a retirement home–let alone anything more permanent.” Damian pulled a chair over and placed it behind him.
Christian shot Damian a look, then turned his scolding on him. “You’re a grown man, and you let two women go out without even arranging security? What were you thinking?”
Damian pressed his lips together. “You’re right, Grandpa. That was an oversight.”
“Aside from being decent–looking and reasonably successful, what else have you got going for you?”
That was quite enough.
Damian brought over a cup of honey water from the side table and handed it to Christian. “Here, this might help soothe your throat.”
Christian was still simmering.
“I heard that instigator is on her way over. What do you intend to do about it?” he asked.
He felt a pang of responsibility. Caroline and Isabelle had only been back a short while, yet unpleasant incidents kept occurring. His regret over their hardships grew even sharper.

Damian glanced toward Isabelle.
Isabelle remained quiet.

If Sophia truly was behind this, even if Isabelle said nothing, both the Foster and Tucker families would hold her accountable. Speaking up now might seem excessive–but staying silent felt like an injustice to what she had endured.
“Sigh…” Christian let out a weary breath. This really wasn’t easy to navigate.
This time, Sophia had stirred up something serious.
Just as they were all weighing the situation, Jonathan arrived with Sophia. Jaxson followed closely behind, as if escorting a wayward child to make amends.
Camellia and Eric hadn’t come–they had gone to the company to handle pressing matters.
Truthfully, they didn’t want to witness this scene, and they hoped to achieve something tangible at work to mitigate the situation—or at least to soften Sophia’s consequences.
But showing up now wouldn’t have been wise either. With the heads of both families present, their appearance might seem defensive or indulgent.
The moment Sophia stepped into the hospital room and saw Christian, a tremor ran through her.
Her legs already felt unsteady, and now they shook visibly. Combined with her fragile mental state–shattered since the night before–her face was ghostly pale.
She stood frozen in the doorway, even forgetting to greet anyone.
Jonathan nudged her subtly from the side, showing no sign of shielding her.
Snapping back to reality, Sophia finally murmured greetings to everyone in the room.
No one responded or acknowledged her, waiting for her to continue.
Sophia looked helplessly at Jonathan, then at Jaxson.
Jaxson tapped his cane lightly against her back, urging her forward.
“Don’t make a scene here. If you have something to say, say it,” Jaxson said, his tone firm and impatient.
Jonathan felt his sister wasn’t the sharpest–probably, their parents had used up all the sense when they had him, and he wasn’t entirely sure how Sophia had managed college.

Since childhood, she’d often acted without thinking. Just recently, she’d been used by Ashley, and now this had happened.
Wait, Ashley…
Jonathan’s thoughts snagged on the name, his mind pausing abruptly.
Jaxson and Christian exchanged polite, measured greetings.
Jaxson had come prepared.
Half an hour later, they left the hospital room.
Sophia wouldn’t be sent abroad. Instead, she was assigned to oversee regional operations in a remote, developing area. If she didn’t meet the agreed performance targets within six months, her inheritance shares would be forfeited.
If she could prove herself capable, there would still be a place for her within the family’s enterprises.
Jaxson had made a tactical concession to avoid a complete breakdown, concerned that Christian might otherwise cut Sophia off entirely, leaving her with no safety net.
Isabelle didn’t feel it was her place to comment extensively. Since the matter had been framed that way, the outcome was neither too harsh nor too lenient—more like a trial by fire, while also stabilizing the immediate situation to prevent a rapid redistribution of assets.
Damian thought Jaxson had handled it shrewdly. It was just unfortunate–his own son hadn’t risen to expectations, and now his granddaughter was floundering. It must’ve been a heavy burden on Jonathan, and it had even dragged Abigail down with them.
Jonathan had only just heard the decision himself, and a dry chuckle rose in his throat. The old man still knows how to play the game.
Christian wanted to say more but found the words stuck. How could he not read between the lines?
So, did the matter just… pass like that, smoothed over without clear resolution?
