“Like what you see?” he murmured in a low, sleep–rough voice, the kind that only belonged to the quiet of early morning.
Lost in the sight of him, Isabelle let out a soft, agreeing hum.
It wasn’t until he laid her down on the bed that she realized what she’d just admitted to.
By then, there was no taking it back.
He was a master at playing two different roles. With his glasses on, he looked all restrained and polished–almost harmless.
Take them off, though, and it was like he’d set something loose. He seemed gentle, but underneath it was a take–charge kind of intensity.
Especially at night, when every feeling got sharper.
Things you kept hidden in your heart got covered by the dark, tucked away like secrets–until your breaths tangled and gave you away.
Maybe the AC had cut out; the room had gotten stifling hot.
Afterward, Damian lay over her, both of them spent. Even his hair was damp with sweat–so much for the shower they’d taken earlier.
He was close, but she didn’t feel weighed down; he kept most of his weight on his arms.
She hadn’t wanted to use anything at first, but the thought of getting pregnant before their Columbus Day wedding made her think twice.
They lay there quietly for a few minutes before Damian scooped her up and carried her to the bathroom to rinse off.
Isabelle ended up washing her hair all over again.
Damian blow–dried it for her right there before they stepped out.
While she waited, he stripped the bed and put on fresh sheets.
Isabelle stood watching him, taking it all in.
He wasn’t wearing a shirt, just a pair of sleep pants. On his lower back, a few faint red lines

stood out–marks she’d left when she’d dug her fingers in during the heat of it all.
In the trash can was her dress, now torn beyond wearing.
Next to it sat the bundle of sweaty sheets he’d just taken off.

“Come over here,” Damian said once he’d finished. He reached for her hand and drew her to
the sofa.
Sitting down, he lifted her foot and started smoothing scar cream onto her calf.
His hands were lean but slightly rough from work–good hands, strong hands, hands that knew how to be both gentle and firm.
It was hard not to get distracted by them.
Isabelle felt a smile tug at her lips. Being around him always brought a blush to her cheeks.
With a face like his, it was a crime not to look.
“Want another round?” He gave her ankle a light squeeze, his eyes warm and teasing.
“No,” she mumbled, feeling her ears go hot.
Who just came out and asked stuff like that?
“Could’ve fooled me,” he chuckled. “The way you were staring, I thought you were about to eat me alive. A guy’s gotta be careful around a woman who looks at him like that.”
“I was not staring!” Isabelle swatted his shoulder, flustered. “And I am not ‘like that“!”
“Yeah? You’re smiling right now.” Damian tilted his head, watching the smile play on her pink cheeks.
“No, I’m not,” she whispered.
“You scratched my back raw and you’re still playing innocent,” Damian said, his voice dropping to that low, gravelly tone. “My hips are gonna be sore for a week.”
Okay, maybe that was her fault.
She gently pulled her foot back, ready to be done with this embarrassing line of talk.

They’d booked out the whole downtown hotel–no expense spared. Plenty of press had shown up, but security kept them all outside.
Damian usually stayed out of the public eye, but today he walked in like he owned the place, not a care in the world.
“Damian.” Alaric’s voice came from across the room. He made his way over, Aurora on his arm.
The moment Aurora spotted Damian, her heart jumped. A cold ripple shot down her back, making her fingers tighten around Alaric’s sleeve.
“You okay?” Alaric glanced down, his tone affectionate.
“Yeah, fine,” Aurora said, forcing a smile.
Fine? She was anything but.
